Everything Goes Dark Lyrics

Hypnotised by mirrors
You should look out your window
Beneath cracked panes of ice
A sky's on fire
Drowned by the screams of decadence
A call to arms
Too busy working out to
Work it out

It's not gonna matter what you chose
It's too late when everything goes

Da-yayaya-ark
Da-yayaya-ark

It's creeping up on you
It knows your name
All that you left behind
Will never be the same
It's come for all that you hold dear
She starts to cry
And here's a song to break your heart
You're looking in the dark

But I can't see
It's getting light
In the night we made mistakes

Da-yayaya-ark
Da-yayaya-ark
Da-yayaya-ark
Da-yayaya-ark

Would you leave yourself alone?
If everything goes dark
Would you lighten up your tone
Once everything goes dark
Everything goes dark
Everything goes dark

Da-yayaya-ark
Da-yayaya-ark
Da-yayaya-ark
Da-yayaya-ark

Everything goes dark

Da-yayaya-ark
Da-yayaya-ark
Da-yayaya-ooh

Uh, I thought it was really obvious that the line is: But I can't see / It's getting LATE Lol, 'cause it's about darkness, and goes with the next line of "in the night we make mistakes".

I love this song, but the original version (when they were still The Hoosier Complex) KILLS me. Way more emotive and dark. I agree with exitmould. I've always thought this song was about how obsessed with appearance humanity in general is (as opposed to one girl/model) and how, if we couldn't see, would we stop fussing over material things? The Hoosiers themselves have said that the theme of the album is "the trick to life is not to get too attached to it", and this song fits that theme, suggesting that we shouldn't be so obsessed with all the tiny details like how we look and what we have, when you could be out, living life to the full and having fun.

I think instead of getting light, it should be guiding lights... but that's just me. It probably is about death.

I know everyone is saying death, which I agree with, but maybe war aswell?

"All that you left behind Will never be the same It's come for all that you hold dear She starts to cry"

"It's not gonna matter what you chose"

Maybe?

That interpretation makes more sense to me since the first verse seems to have pretty apocalyptic imagery.

I think it's about death. I love this song so much. I love the way he sings dark and the build up at the end... just listen to the drums in the background.

I thought it might've been about a model dying or something... I have no idea, really haha

"Hypnotised by mirrors You should look out your window" Really vain model, needs to think about the world rather than their looks?

"Beneath cracked panes of ice A sky's on fire Drowned by the screams of decadence A call to arms" They could seem really cold and icy on the surface but they do have a burning personality or something similar and they are drowned by their decadence (self-indulgence and luxury etc)

"Too busy working out to Work it out" Too busy working out (as in looking good) to work it out... it being life more important things.

"It's creeping up on you It knows your name All that you left behind Will never be the same" Death is creeping and knows your name, and everything the model leaves behind when they die won't be the same... friends and family etc.

"It's come for all that you hold dear She starts to cry And here's a song to break your heart You're looking in the dark" The model knows she's going to die...

"But I can't see it's guiding light In the night we made mistakes" I'm pretty sure it's guiding light? But it's about her maybe regretting the choices she's made?

"Would you leave yourself alone? If everything goes dark Would you lighten up your tone Once everything goes dark" Would you change your view on your life as/once you die?

I have no idea, really. But that's what I got from it... So yeah, dunno! Tell me what you're thinking :)

OH MY WORD THAT WAS AN ESSAY AND A HALF. Sorry everyone.

I agree leemcgavinjoey. I think it seems almost as if she's already gone...as in a ghost and sees someone just like she was and it's like she is sad because she would like to warn her but can't. I don't know... I guess it's because of the observant point of view to the song that makes me think it's a vain warning. And the buildup at the end with the voices mingling and wailing somewhat...reminds me of a ghost or the wind wailing. It's just beautiful and like a previous poster said, creepy as well. I love Irwin's voice....rates up there with Matt Bellamy in style for me.

I don't think this is about a specific person, exactly. To me, it's a look at the hopelessness of society right now, the way vanity and material possessions are coveted above all else, but in reality those things are meaningless because in the end you'll die and leave it all behind, and it won't matter what you chose, what you owned, how you looked, what or who you loved. And really, the only reason a life of decadence and convenience is so highly valued is because people KNOW that they will die, and must distract themselves from that bleak reality by indulging in whatever happiness they can find, and making themselves admirable and attractive to the living.
