Not As We Lyrics
Spat out on new terrain.
Unsure, unconvincing...
This faint and shaky hour...
Start over again...
Step one, step one,
I'm barely making sense
For now I'm faking it...
'Til I'm psuedo-making it.
From scratch begin again,
But this time I as "I",
And not as "we"..
Timid, without a hand.
Feign brave, with steel intent.
Little and hardly here....
Step one, step one
With not much making sense just yet
I'm faking it 'til I'm psuedo-making it
From scratch, begin again
But this time I as "I"
And not as "we"
Wide open, frayed....
If God is taking bets,
I pray he wants to lose.
Start over again....
Step one, step one,
I'm barely making sense.
Just yet I'm faking it,
'Til I'm psuedo-making it.
From scratch, begin again,
But this time I as "I",
And not as "we"...
It being about a breakup is the obvious meaning, but it struck me the other day that it might not be about a breakup at all; but rather, a point in life at which you need to reevaluate everything you're doing, and start thinking for yourself, instead of letting other people guide you.
To me, this song very much describes my life at the moment. Just finished an education I really didn't want, but people told me I would be right for it. And so I took it. But it's over now, and really, I stand at a crossroads in my life, so I gotta start over again - but this time, I as I, and not We as We. Get the point? :) I gotta search through my soul and make the choices that are right for ME - not the choices that would please everyone else. That is my interpretation of what this song is saying - it's not only about breakups, however, it could very well be. It's just a similar situation.
thanks for making me understand it! I needed to hear this according to my angel.. and its true :) thanks. anyone in a similar light needs to follow their own heart and soul.

I understand that this song is about a breakup but I could also see it as starting a new stage in life.
The artist “Alanis Morisette” and song “Not As We” were always a favorite of mine. Like many of you, I loosely felt that the song was about a break up as well, most likely it probably is. However, approximately 10 years ago, l loss the brightest star in my solar system, my daughter. The first time hearing this song following the loss landing on me completely different. Its meaning was much deeper. The lyrics felt personal. “ Day one, day one, start over again Step one, step one, I am barely making sense From now I'm faking it 'til I'm pseudo making it” was how each day felt. The lyric “Eyes wet, toward Wide open frayed If God's taking bets I pray He wants to lose” entered my soul with demon energy, and all I wanted to do was fight God for the rights to my daughter’s soul. Alanis and her team are spectacular writers. I always wanted to know if the origin of this song started with a loss. Either way, this song made me feel seen during a period where I often chose invisibility. It helped me understand that the process of rebirth was afoot.
Why am i the first?! Alanis' a goddess. This is song's so damn beautiful. Brought me to tears, the first time i heard it. Is it about her break-up with her longterm bodyfriend Ryan Reynolds?
btw: there are some mistakes in the lyrics..
Reborn and shivering Spat out on new terrain

Gun shy and quivering Timid without a hand
Feign brave with steel intent little and hardly here

this song is soo good!
Edited. Sorry about that- my file had the corrections but apparently I pasted the wrong file first... I did what I could with the only (at the time, all that was available) studio-quality lines on the episode of House, plus a full version yet extremely poorly recorded first live performance of the song. Hopefully I'll have access to confirm these lyrics in the near future and have this settled, finally.
This song was on House near the beginning of season 4. I've been searching for it ever since, and finally found a good copy of it! I'm seeing her in concert with matchbox 20 tomorrow. She is amazing!
This song is beautiful. I think it will bring a new kind of flavour to the upcoming album! This song is definitely about a break-up, doesn't take a genius to work that one out. And highly likely about Ryan Reynolds. peace x
Human-beef, I agree with you. The breakup is what I got too, but I see your meaning, too. It's interesting that it appeared on House. You can almost picture some almost-died patient getting a new lease on life, and feeling reborn. Not that she made it to fit into House, but it's appropriately placed.
