Idols and Anchors Lyrics

Now your heroes have fallen
Championless
The seas are rising

So torch every banner
Every hope of surviving
This storm is breaking
Security has left you
Treading water

Now taste the fear
Taste the uncertainty

What will you do
When there's nothing left for you to cling to?
What will you do
With your one last breathe?

Thrive in your emptiness

Burn all you love
There's no hope for the weak
Your heroes have died

No heart
No hope

Face to face with the abyss
One by one they fall away
And won't be missed

Can you hear it?
Can you hear the sound?
As our broken Idols
Come crashing down

Now taste the fear
Now taste the fear

Burn all you love
There's no hope for the weak
Our heroes have died

Burn all you love
There's no hope for the weak
Burn all you love

Great song. Great solo too. I love how the bass drum kicks with the nps of the solo at certain points.

Seems like this song is about the person(s) or idea(s) you idolize in your life, and how they've failed, so in turn, you fail. You look up to this thing that has meant so much to you for so long and they just come crashing down unexpectedly. Or.. expectedly. You ever see people who do things because other people do them? "They planned their life out this way and it's worked out for them so far, so I should do it, because I can't think for myself." Then they end up coming down hard.

People in Hollywood, movie stars, musicians, people look up to them, people idolize them. I always looked up to Layne Staley, because of his artistic sense. I remember him saying in an interview, saying how he didn't want his fans looking up to him as a role model for drugs, he wanted to be appreciated for his music. A lot of people looked at him and thought, "Oh, Layne Staley does all these drugs, lets be a cool rockstar like him and do them too." And his drugs finally became the end of him. This is how an idol fell [significance of 'anchors'].

I think this song just puts that message out there, "Think for yourself. Don't look up to other people, look up to yourself. You are the only you."

However, this is only what I think. I could be completely wrong. But, something to think about. :D

From the first time I heard the time, I've been able to envision nothing but Vikings attacking someone.

dude, what? xD

This song is about following someone with high expectations for them.

The intro verse is about the leader dying/falling/whatthefuckever, so the follower gives up.

Basically, don't let anybody lead you. It's fine to have a role-model or someone to guide you, but ultimately, you must guide yourself. If one domino stands next to another, and the other falls, chances are they both fall.

The anchors metaphor was just a reference saying that leaders hold us back.

Thanks for keeping it simple

It's also really interesting when you look at the meaning of this song and the lyrics of the transition song right after it.

The first song that I fell in love with off the new CD. The meaning however, I am unsure of.

its about idols dragging you down. the title pretty much explains it i reckon. idols will drag you down, much like the proverbial anchor. basically, u can follow someone but dont worship them.

ANCHORS people.

Yes, dragging you down.

Don't put all your faith in idols-- for they fail.

In my top 3 PWD songs ever.

  1. Romance is dead
  2. Idols and anchors
  3. cant decide a 3rd, so many epic songs :P

I think the title of this song has a lot of meaning.

Idols stand tall above everything, they are inspiration and hope while anchors sink to the bottom of the sea floor.

This song sounds to me as it's time to stand up and demolish your sense of self pity and make something of what you have.

Stop being a fucking pussy; shit is happening all around you and you need to man up and make the best of it.

Don't sink like an anchor.
