The Nest Lyrics

Saw them gathering sticks from the ground
By the thicket while assembling a nest

On alert for any lingering threat
Building frantically without rest

Walls grew dense and blocked out the sun
Caving in everyone

Darkness fell, wiped a once joyous tone
Then famished, like possessed ended eating their own

Saw them gathering sticks from the ground
By the thicket while assembling the nest

Yaay. First comment...

Amazing song.. at the start it makes me feel a bit sleepy, in a good way. I didn't have a personal opinion on the song, I didn't usually focus on the lyrics, but apparently it's about nationalism and paranoia. I can see how that would fit in.

He talking about..i think...how people become so wrapped up in protecting themselves from everyday things.

"assembling a nest"- confort for themselves which they built "Frantically" as it is all they are interested in doing.

But with being selfish does not come happiness, "Darkness fell wiped out a once joyous tone"

He then says how, ironically, it affected those who were so set on being happy for themselves, as they secluded themselves from everything and everyone.

I always felt like it's about someone being so concerned by their own lives that they walk all over, or destroy those around them for their own advancement.

"On alert for any lingering threats. Building frantically without rest." seems to be this concern about building up a life that you believe you should have, a building up a sense of safety.

and

"Darkness fell wiped out a once joyous tone. Then famished, like possessed ended up eating their own." is when something doesn't go their way, they don't feel that safety they use others and bleed them dry to protect themselves.

I guess the repetition of the first verse could be starting the cycle of bulding up your life again.

I always thought of it on a personal level, but traces23, i like the nationalism idea too. I guess it can be a similar situation.

This is probably my favourite from the album. seems underrated on here though, which is a shame.

Kind of relevant now that we are building a wall on the border and instituting travel bans. Listen the words and see how they apply to the current crisis in America. Or any society for that matter that tries to fortify themselves in at the expense of all else.
