Cover art for The Nest lyrics by José González

I always felt like it's about someone being so concerned by their own lives that they walk all over, or destroy those around them for their own advancement.

"On alert for any lingering threats. Building frantically without rest." seems to be this concern about building up a life that you believe you should have, a building up a sense of safety.

and

"Darkness fell wiped out a once joyous tone. Then famished, like possessed ended up eating their own." is when something doesn't go their way, they don't feel that safety they use others and bleed them dry to protect themselves.

I guess the repetition of the first verse could be starting the cycle of bulding up your life again.

I always thought of it on a personal level, but traces23, i like the nationalism idea too. I guess it can be a similar situation.

This is probably my favourite from the album. seems underrated on here though, which is a shame.
