Face in the window in the night
Caught for a second by the light
Ashes of memories still aglow
Only for you
Portraits and pictures you once saw
Visions in blue
Read while the letters still remain
Sip from the wine of youth again
Oaths made in silence still return
Only for you
Cast like a shroud you're clutching on
Visions in blue
Catch aimless smiles from passers by
Blistered and broken in reply
Breath seems to mist the hazy view
Only for you
Tears coat your lifeless eyes with dew
Visions in blue
Visions in blue
Ashes of memories still aglow
Portraits and pictures you once saw
Ashes of memories still aglow
Portraits and pictures you once saw
Ashes of memories still aglow
Portraits and pictures you once saw
Face in the window in the night
Caught for a second by the light
Ashes of memories still aglow
Only for you
Portraits and pictures you once saw
Visions in blue

    My Interpretation

As far as I understand the sense of the lyrics( I must admit that I'm not a native speaker myself, though this song is my ultimate favourite of the band's stuff, and I contemplated its lyrics many times), I can imagine a man in his 40-es, who's walking down the street alone and without any different purpose. Suddenly a face in the window ( maybe a face from his past, maybe not, just kinda trigger) awakens in his mind the dearest memories of his youth that seemed to have been buried down long ago. The dying embers of long lost pasion seem to begin to burn again. The storm of emotions on his face and tears that all of the sudden fill his eyes may even scare passers-by. Just listen, how Midge's singing illustrates this flood of feelings, getting more and more emotional from the 1-st verse to 2-nd and finding its culmination at the end of the third verse. And the repeated 1-st verse at the end of the song which is sung less emotionally than the third one, expresses the end of the soul storm, ashes still aglow but fire has faded.

I remember having the VHS video of Ultravox "The Collection" where there was a video of Visions in Blue. It was a mix of a live performance of the band with a film section showing two women bathing together in a bath being loving and a scene of one of the women looking out of a window soaked with raindrops.

I think the song and the video are about the heartbreak surrounding forbidden love. A love forbidden by society, values or principles. The two women genuinely are in love yet are separated by something powerful and overbearing. The longing to be together and sharing love along with memories of what once was, is painful yet needed to carry on living , maybe in hope ?....

Face in the window looking out for who you love...memories, photos, letters, looking through people who smile because one misses something precious from life, that is forbidden. Clutching on to memories to keep alive.

i just came up with a theory, we might be dealing with trhe murder of a love one. i assume the narrato{s lover, who was murdered in her home and could only have a glimpse of the perpetrator, but too late. i also have to assume the narrator had suffered a similar fate some time before. this is whyÑ when he was killed he remained in our plane wondering for a while and thats why he insists on her taking advantage of that time to to smuggle images and feelings from pictures, love letters, etc before leaving to god knows where with not much from her previous life, only what you came along in that limboid reality and probaly he realized too late. remember, if they indeed were lovers in life this contraband serves both. interestingly enough the tibetan book of the dead (which is read to the deceased for days to guide him in his trip) focuses on making the recently passed be aware he is dead and he has to let go to everything that tied him to his life, being able to do this ensures a smoother trip. but remember buddhists end up being reborn into whatever animal you can think of and in the process being their memories of a past life wipped. so this might be a reborn type scenario. and the plan is to come back with memories and their love for each other intact.
ts all "only for you" because a wondering soul wonders alone. aimless smiles from people passing by because she is not visible to them. i apologize about my absurd punctuation nomenclators, and missing or replaced characters, iñm strugling with a spanish keyboard, wireless and made in argentina! here comes the disturbing bit a corpse}s eyes turn milky blue being deceased for hours and keep decading at a very rapid rate. so she better read while she still has time. and most certainly her visions in the next life from that period will be tainted in light blue. hope it wasnñt too long and somehow entertaining

This song is just the top, total romanticism, to listen in a foggy day looking through the window, nostalgia and majestuosity, Midge Ure, a hero of this period and its video is one of the best.

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
