It Had to Be You Lyrics
I'll get lost, messed up and bored when I'm alone too long
I can't sleep, function or eat when I'm not with someone
Late last fall, she ended it all and moved to who-knows-where
Just like that, she vanished and packed and never even called
Do you feel a certain sense of synergy between yourself and me?
A kind of macabre and somber Wondertwin type of harmony
What if it was you?
You that I needed all along
I felt like a fool,
Kicking and screaming and pretending we were wrong
Let's get wrecked on pop tarts and sex and see the Taj Mahal
Let's save birds from Prince William Sound and skateboard through the mall
Let's fight crime with mangoes and limes and join the PGA
Let's win big with every spin but hurry, I can't wait
Do you spend a fortune on those late night prepaid television scams
In search of the perfect blender, steak knife and non-stick frying pan?
What if it was you?
You that I needed all along
I felt like a fool
Thinking we were completely wrong
It seemed like a dream
A beautiful scream
That echoed forever
And made us not afraid to feel a thing
And after it ends
We'll try to be friends
They say that what doesn't kill us makes us who we are
All this time and everything's changed but I still feel the same
All good things eventually end and get washed down the drain
What a disaster it would be if you discovered that I cared
A little too much for friends but not enough to share
What if it was you?
You that I needed all along
I felt like a fool
Now that I'm sure that I was wrong
It had to be you.
It had to be you.
It had to be you.
I knew it was you.

In your new song “It Had to Be You,” you go on an extended riff about Pop Tarts, the PGA, Prince William and steak knives. Care to explain what it’s really about?
Well, I was coming out of the bathroom at our rehearsal space in New York, and ran into [musician] Regina Spektor, who I love. I was writing this song, and all of the sudden I thought, “This could be a duet!” So it’s sort of sung like it would be a duet with her. But it’s…not. Anyway, it’s about realizing that the person you don’t think you want to be with is the person you should be with. But by then it’s too late. -Justin Pierre

Like everybody's already said, this song is about a relationship that ended suddenly and at first you don't realise how much that person you were involved in a relationship with meant so you go into denial & slowly it starts to hit you as everything around you starts to remind you of that person which triggers memories ...good memories that make you think. 'Hey...it wasn't maybe he/she is the one. He/She was THE one (that you feel for without even thinking about it getting this serious). I'm screwed.'
The end. Boo's and tomato's, beer bottles thrown curtains fall
This song describes, without flaw, my current situation.
"Let's fight crime with mangos and limes"
Brilliant. I love this song.
I love this song. So far, it's my favorite.
The more I listen to all of the new MCS songs, the more this one sticks out to me. I think the begining has been stuck in my head since I first heard it.
It's a sound in Alaska and part of the 2nd largest national forest in the U.S
i cant figure out the reference in the line "let's fight crime with mangos and limes"... anyone get it?
it's just a guess but i think it's a reference to either a Donkey Kong, Yoshi, or Mario video game lol.

It's all stuff that would be pretty much meaningless to us, but obviously Justin and someone gets it.

i don't get this part
the new album is sweeet tho
he means that he cares enough about her that it's distracting to the friendship and that he thinks about her a lot, but that he's scared to tell her that he likes her.

he's looking at it like it's a crush, not like it's actually love.

So essentially to me: he sees her as a friend BUT finds himself caring...
So essentially to me: he sees her as a friend BUT finds himself caring for her more than he should for a normal friend and he knows this because he doesn't want to share her with anyone else ("...not enough to share").
