This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
You lend me your ear
To try to listen
Lend me yor tears
There lies a reason
Lend me your fears
That hide your prison
Beautiful dear, the skies have risen
But you're spending and spending your life with me,
Hoping to find your destiny,
Spending and spending your life with me,
Again
Only you can make it better
Only you can make it right
Only you can make it better this time
You lend me your ear
To try to listen
Lend me yor tears
There lies a reason
Lend me your fears
That hide your prison
Lend me your fears, the skies have risen
But you're spending and spending your life with me,
Hoping to find your destiny,
Spending and spending your life with me,
Again
Only you can make it better
Only you can make it right
Only you can make shit better this time
I don't know you enough
I don't know you at all
I don't know you enough
No
Lend me your ear
Lend me your tears
But you're spending and spending your life with me,
Hoping to find your destiny,
Spending and spending your life with me,
Again
Only you can make it better
Only you can make it right
Only you can make this better this time
Only you can make it better
Only you can make it right
Only you can make this better this time
To try to listen
Lend me yor tears
There lies a reason
Lend me your fears
That hide your prison
Beautiful dear, the skies have risen
But you're spending and spending your life with me,
Hoping to find your destiny,
Spending and spending your life with me,
Again
Only you can make it better
Only you can make it right
Only you can make it better this time
You lend me your ear
To try to listen
Lend me yor tears
There lies a reason
Lend me your fears
That hide your prison
Lend me your fears, the skies have risen
But you're spending and spending your life with me,
Hoping to find your destiny,
Spending and spending your life with me,
Again
Only you can make it better
Only you can make it right
Only you can make shit better this time
I don't know you enough
I don't know you at all
I don't know you enough
No
Lend me your ear
Lend me your tears
But you're spending and spending your life with me,
Hoping to find your destiny,
Spending and spending your life with me,
Again
Only you can make it better
Only you can make it right
Only you can make this better this time
Only you can make it better
Only you can make it right
Only you can make this better this time
