The Obsessive Devotion Lyrics
Don't you ever blind me
Don't be a foolish thief
- Am I?
Don't you ever bring yourself to grief
Don't you ever blind me
Don't ever trick my mind
- Did I?
Don't you think that you can lie to me
- Did I lie?
Fortuna exprimitur artibus falsis
Et mendacem memorem esse oportet
If he is your moon, I will be your earth
To which you can return, safely or injured.
I feel only misery for myself when I
Look through the eyes of someone else
Don't you choke and bind me
Don't be a bleeding heart
- Am I?
Fold then walk away or play your cards
- Let us play!
Fortuna exprimitur artibus falsis
Et mendacem memorem esse oportet
If he is your moon, I will be your earth
To which you can return, safely or injured.
I feel only misery for myself when I
Look through the eyes of someone else
I can't even recognize the path which has to be
Taken to enter infinity.
- Don't you dare me
I dare you
- You don't care about me
I care about you
- Don't you touch me
- Liar
Fortuna exprimitur artibus falsis
Et mendacem memorem esse oportet
Adoratio permanebit
Quotiens me eges, adero
I prefer to be unhappy with you,
Rather than being depressed without you.
I belong to someone, I'm dedicated to
Nothing lasts forever but you, you do…
I prefer to be a lair just like you
To fulfill my deepest desires
I belong to someone, I'm dedicated to
But all that I desire is you
One thoughtless moment passes in slow motion
As I lie down, I realise that…
All I wish is to get rid of this Obsessive Devotion
Venia ad vitam aeternam
Non mibi, non tibi, sed nobis
Hit me as you can
Beat me as you wish
Liar
Fortuna mutual coniuncti
Per tota saecula futura
I have raised myself for you
But now I regret
Venia ad vitam aeternam
This is the end
Don't be a foolish thief
- Am I?
Don't you ever bring yourself to grief
Don't ever trick my mind
- Did I?
Don't you think that you can lie to me
- Did I lie?
Et mendacem memorem esse oportet
To which you can return, safely or injured.

I absolutely love this song. Definitely one of my favourites by Epica... I think it's about feeling a deep obsession towards someone that you love, but who doesn't return the feeling... about the impossibility of trying to get rid of this person...
Thanks for the translation Niels, really appreciated!
In fact, your translations made me consider the fact that this song might also be about someone with a faith in God that they want to abandon but can't, since they've believed for so long. It's about this but it's in the guise of a song about a relationship, similar to Never Enough. What do you all think?
Does anyone know what the latin words mean? This is a very good song by the way.
It's about letting go of someone that you love. Even though this person is abusive and unfaithful, you love them anyway obsessively. Towards the end, that line is "I effaced myself for you." And at the end, he lets go and says 'this is the end, I've had enough'. I'd like to know what the Latin parts mean again.
Like most people have said it's about a relationship. An unhealthy one where both people are very much in love with each other, but do not trust one another so there for no relationship can be had.
I'm not sure about this, but I think the Latin means this:
Fortuna exprimitur artibus falsis et mendacem memorem esse oportet = Fate is enforced by misleading tricks and one must be aware of the lie
Adoratio permanebit. Quotiens me eges, adero = Adoration will continue its existance. As long as you long for me, I will appear
Venia ad vitam aeternam, non mihi, non tibi, sed nobis = Come to the eternal victory, not for me, not for you, but for us
Fortuna mutual coniuncti per tota saecula future = Borrowed destiny and future generation are fully interconnected
Venia ad vitam aeternam = Come to the eternal victory
As others said, the song is about not being able to leave the one you love and hate at the same time.
isn't this song about a married woman who feels much stronger love to someone else but cant let go of her marriage - her "obsessive devotion"?
"If he is your moon, I will be your earth To which you can return, safely or injured" - who is he talking about if not her husband?
"I prefer to be a lair just like you To fulfill my deepest desires I belong to someone, I'm dedicated to But all that I desire is you" - she's saying she rather lie to her husband and be with him.
it sounds like, throughout the song, he's trying to convince her to leave her marriage and be with him but she's not convinced in how true his love is.
niels - thank you for the translations! the latin adds so much to this song.
such an awesome combination of vocals, guitars, and orchestra.
i really want to chuck this song at this one guy's head.
i dont think that this song is about love or something like that most of epica's song are about religion and also about fighting the fundamentalism especially ''the embrace that smothers parts''
so i think ''dark artist'' is right
