I Never Wanted Lyrics
"the obsessions of this world" "only a slave to this" (think "this" is the need) "these things that will never satisfy me"
I think all of these sentences show that it's not about a girl, but rather about singer's life. Think that he's talking about material needs (even world OBSESSION), he's a slave to these things, and they don't satisfy him.
The NEW DAY is the day he changed. The day he stopped to adore these false needs, and care about something he didn't care about before.
"take it back": take all the material needs i have, take all my owns, 'cause tomorrow could be the last day. I can die tomorrow, and these things won't help me. (that's here i think he's also talking about God, the one he cares about now that will save him even tomorrow falls).
People who believe in material needs won't be saved...'cause these things will return to dust like 'em. But now he's free from all these needs.
i personally think this song is about having an addiction. i never wanted.. is talking about how 'whoever' didnt want to turn into who they are. tomorrow may fall but today is already gone, is talking about how they gave into their addiction and hopefully the day after might be different. ive seen my world change and go back to where it came, trying to figure out what led us to do the things we did that let us give into our addiction we never wanted. brought back to life only to die again until tomorrow, then we repeat the vicious circle...
Exactly my thoughts pebbles. I don't know if its about drugs or not, but there are clearly things in his life which he feels bound to, but they don't satisfy him. The elements of a relationship in the song are likely the relationship he has with these things which he never wanted. The lines "I have seen my world change and then go back to where it came" are likely referring to trying to break free from these things, but constantly going back to them.

As I Lay Dying have stated on numerous occasions that all of the members of the group are Christians. When asked if they're a Christian band or Christians in a band, Tim Lambesis stated on the band's FAQ, "I'm not sure what the difference is between five Christians playing in a band and a Christian band. If you truly believe something, then it should affect every area of your life. All five of us are Christians. I believe that change should start with me first, and as a result, our lyrics do not come across very 'preachy.' Many of our songs are about life, struggles, mistakes, relationships and other issues that don't fit entirely in the spiritual category. However, all of these topics are written about through my perspective as a Christian." During an August 2010 radio interview, Lambesis once more made a statement regarding the band and his faith, expressing that his world view as a Christian "always comes across in our lyrics in some way or another."
First? whatev anyway for me its like hes finally gettin over a girl who he cared so much about but she never acknoledges that fact. He "never wanted" to hurt her but he has to in order to let go
yea
sounds like he has come out of a relationship, and he is tired of chasing for love everytime only to get the same heartbreak everytime
"we are brought back to life only to die"
and in the end it sounds like the auther is pretty much ready to give up chasing
"I will no longer adore these things that will never satisfy me"
that said: most of as i lay dying's songs appear to be about relationships but are actually about god ..so i could well far off.
what you think ?
I agree with both of you, it sounds a lot more like it's about a girl rather than god.
awesome song- i love Tim's scream in the beginning. (gone)
I completely agree with paul151. In many songs Tim talks about materialism and this song is no different. Love this song and the entire albumn
I don't think it's about a relationship with a person, there seems to be a major theme running through this album I think- real vs. false, how we adore materialistic things, how we think that possessions will make us happy, how we depends on stuff for our happiness but this way of living is wrong. The real happiness comes through belief in god.
i doubt this song has anything to do with a girl or a relationship i think it has a bigger meaning it has to do with life and probably God because they are a Christian band
