I wish i was still drinking whiskey, wine and beer
The sound of glasses clinking, so sweet to my ear
I wouldn't have to listen to the time that's running out
I'd use it much more wisely, I'd drink and fall about

I wish I was still drinking, then I'd have no fear
Tell you how to fix the world, then have another beer
I wouldn't have to feel the pain that's in a mother's eyes
I'd drink till I believe the sound of my own drunken lies

I wish I was still drinking when nothing is too clear
Like the TV evangelist fueling people's fear
Taking all their hard earned cash in the name of the holy one
Their days are surely numbered, their day will surely come

I wish I was still drinking, I was a lot more fun
Life of the endless party, friends with anyone
I wouldn't have to answer for the promises I broke
Like the president today, or when he drank and snorted coke

I wish I was still drinking, than I wouldn't have to hear
The sound of rapid gunfire exploding in my ear
I'd drink through the nightmare of friends cryin' out for help
I would drink through everything I've seen or heard or felt

I wish I was still drinking, no I really, really do
I'd gather all my fair weather friends like him and her and you
I'd count all the missing teeth, I can no longer chew
I'd even drive my ol' white car, cause she likes drinking too

Yeah, I wish i was still drinking whiskey, wine and beer
The sound of glasses clinking, so sweet to my ear
I wouldn't have to listen to the time thats running out
I'd use it much more wisely, I'd drink and fall about

This song is about George Bush and how he can mask his war decisions and corruption behind some good ol' alcohol.

are you kidding? this song is obviously about himself being a recovering alcoholic which is evident in some of his other songs like I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You

Well, Colin does take a nice Jab at Bush, "wouldn't have to answer for the promises I broke Like the president today, or when he drank and snorted coke." Maybe the rest is about another leader in the world and war, there is too much talk of fixing the world, gunshots, a mothers pain and being old with missing teeth for it to be about Colin.

Well, as a recovering alcoholic i can tell you i think this song it's about Colin Hay himself. One of the things you miss when you stop drinking is the sweet relief of being drunk and stop feeling reality. Lines like "sounds of glasses clinking so sweet to my ears" are things that remember you the times you drank. Also it tells other things like not having to face responsabilities, or not seeing your own friends suffering, when you're wasted it's really difficult to caer about others.

It also says some things about stupid ass leaders, cheaters, fraudulent religions.

I love this song, at this point of my life i've been thinking about drinking again, and this song reminded me of how absurd and lonely alcoholic life is.

To me this song is not about alcoholism or a strict attack on Bush. This song has a broader scope. It is him seeing the mounting problems in the world and finally giving up and becoming resigned to the fact that they can't be fixed or avoided and instead he now wishes he could just have a drink so he can enjoy the time he has left as best as he can and forget about the "time that's running out".

To me this song sounds like it's the point of view from a person who is nearing the end of their days and no longer can drink like they used to. They wish they could go back to when they were younger and could be out all night partying and drinking and having a good time with friends. That's what I think of when I hear this song, but to each his own.

I Wish I Was Still Drinking is TOTALLY about Colin, you can find plenty of lyrics in other songs to back this up, Beautiful Day, Wayfaring sons to name just two, the words about the president and evangelists are just two truthful asides, I would like to read an interview on how long ago he quit and any temptations etc

Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.

Fast Car

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere. In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
