Beautiful World Lyrics
I like swimming in the sea
I like to go out beyond the white breakers
Where a man can still be free,
Or a woman if you are one
I like swimming in the sea
I like drinking Irish Tea
With a little bit of Lapsang souchong
I like making my own Tea
I like driving in my car
Roll the top down,
Sometimes I travel quite far
Drive to the ocean
Stare up at the stars
Death in large numbers, no respect for woman, or our little ones
I tried talking to Jesus, but he just put me on hold
Said he'd been swamped by calls this week
And He could not shake his cold
Perhaps this is as good as it gets
When you've given up the drink and those nasty cigarettes
Now I leave the party early at least with no regrets
I watch the sun as it comes up I watch it as it sets
Yeah this is as good as it gets
I like sleeping with Marie
She is one sexy girl full of mystery
She says she doesn't love me, but she likes my company
For now that's good enough for me

Mybe it's a reminder to us all to slow down, find joy in all the little aspects of our busy, rushed lives...like when it's a gorgeous day and you're just driving somewhere, or taking a quiet moment to enjoy a good cup of tea...but I also think it's about seeking something more. He's disillusioned with things going on in the world, he feels ignored by Jesus, he feels an emptiness that the things of this world just can't fill, which is why he asks, is this as good as it gets? It's almost as though he's resigned to the idea that it wil never be any better so he's just going to make the most of what he does have...kind of melancholy. But no matter what the actual meaning of this song is, I love it. I think it's beautiful, well-written, and it's one of my very favorites.

I love it! I think it's about recognising that there are serious issues in the world, and being aware of global problems, but trying not to dwell on them and but trying to find the little things that make you happy so that you can still manage to enrich your life in spite of them.
It's put across so simply that you can't help but feel affected. Love the music too!

this song is amazing, it never fails to make me smile. its not a heavy song it just kind of rejoices in the small things that people take for granted.

"or a woman if you are one..." Great song...simple and makes you happy.
This is a terrible lyric. It has no rhyme or rhythm and does not flow with the rest of the song. It is almost as if he was going to be sued for being sexist and then decided to add this lyric in here. I despise your entire being for every mentioning that this is a great song, in the same sentence as this lyrics is linked. You are right, it is a great song, but this is the worst lyric on the planet. Please delete this before I have to destroy you.

sw123, (assuming you are being serious,) get over it; the line is pretty obviously meant to be humorous and therefore to sound a little awkward.

does this song remind anyone of Albert Camus' book "the Stranger"?
No. This song has absolutly nothing to do with the stranger.

The point is that its celebration of simple pleasures, particularly the two specific examples of swimming and the sun, are very akin to the philosophy of Mersault in that book - and I thought the same thing when I heard it.

This doesn't mean that it was intentional or whatever, but your reply is way too dismissive (and perhaps biased - did the book offend you? just asking!)

oh i absolutely love this song
so much.

the word that wasn't understood is lapsang souchong. it's a kind of tea, too.
and yes, such a beautifully simple song.

yes! it reminds me of The Stranger a whole lot. I both heard this song first this summer, and I also had to read the book.
I like sleeping with marie I like drinking irish tea I like swimming in the sea
Lines 17 - 23 disagree, though.

'I like sleeping with Marie She is one sexy girl full of mystery she says she doesnt love me, but she likes my company for now thats good enough for me'
I know its not about me and that guy. But when I hear it, it feels like it is.
