The Courtesan Has Sung Lyrics

Courtesan has sung
And Nadia says the crowd’s too young
And Amber says she hates guitar

The Courtesan has sung
And Nadia says the crowd’s too young
And Amber says she hates guitar

Think of the scene where a washed-up actor
Wipes the makeup off his wife
And says
Morticians must’ve took you for a whore

The Courtesan has sung
And Nadia says the crowd’s too young
And Amber says she hates guitar

The stranger finds you in your home
Says, “Brother, your work’s got no soul”
You say, “Brother, bite your tongue,”
“It is my soul that you have won”

The Courtesan has sung
And Nadia says the crowd’s too young
And Amber says she hates guitar

And when she showed him all her paintings
He said let’s do something racy
Took the bottle from his pocket
It was vodka
Again

The Courtesan has sung
And Nadia says the crowd’s too young
And Amber says she hates guitar

Five actors have arrived
They are good-looking but they’re hungry
They start looking with the trash found on the
Safety
Of the stage

And you see a crowd is forming
But the winged things are swarming
Yelling, “Stop, it's fucking poison!”
But the deaf, they hear no warnings

Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

Ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo

Think of the scene where a washed-up actor
Wipes the make-up off his wife
And says
Morticians must’ve took you for a whore
Oh, morticians must’ve took you for a whore
Oh, look, I’m sorry that they took you for a whore
And I am sorry if you took me for a whore
Oh, I am sorry if you took me for a whore
But if you're sorry that you took me for a whore
Well then I'm sorry that I took you for morticians…

Ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo

Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

"And when she showed him all her paintings He said let’s do something racy Took the bottle from his pocket It was vodka Again"

When i heard this song i nearly cried because it resonates so closely to what I went through the past 2 years. Well all their songs do but this one was definately intense. I met my ex when he was sober and I mistakenly accepted that as his identity. As time passed, and as I painted more & wanted to do more things related to art & exploring, his true self became apparent that all he wanted to do in life was to chemically induce his happiness with alcohol.

The last painting I did was myself miserable on a boat cradling him and he liked it - thats when I knew he didn't understand me anymore. I should've painted it the fist year we were together. har har har.

9/10 times I have no clue what the hell Spencer Krug is singing about. Does anyone know what this song's about? Is it supposed to be taken literally?

The only thing I can think of is that the courtesan is something like the opposite of the "fat lady" who sings at the end...

The verse about the "stranger" to me represents that a musician bears his or her soul to the world via their music, and in this case, is told that it lacks soul. Same thing with the "paintings," where an artist is displaying her life's work and whoever she's showing it too just wants to do something "racy." The fact that the racy thing turns out to be vodka (again) could mean that often rock bands that become so called "self indulgent" a la drugs are just going the predictable route.

I often interpret these songs to be about musicians, which probably isn't the case. I don't know. The theme of actors that runs through the entire album just represents the most exhibitionist form of artist...

as for the morticians must have took you for a whore part, well, the only thing i can think of is that's just his way of telling her she looks lifeless and cheap. i guess. let's just ask spencer krug.

I'm not sure exactly what this song "means". But me and my roomate think in general that sunset rubdown lyrics mostly take place in historical times. In this case i really get the sense its shakespearean times and some minstrels have arrived (or actors) and are having a party. Maybe a woman has drunk herself to death, or someone killed her, but the doctors mistook her for a whore because she was most likely in costume. Back then whores and actors were both social pariahs, and i think krug is trying to comment on that too.

whoa man.... if spencer read that he'd be like "damn...i gotta start making my lyrics even more obtuse..."

a very well thought out interpretation though.
