In this case i really get the sense its shakespearean times and some minstrels have arrived (or actors) and are having a party. Maybe a woman has drunk herself to death, or someone killed her, but the doctors mistook her for a whore because she was most likely in costume. Back then whores and actors were both social pariahs, and i think krug is trying to comment on that too.
