To Build A Mountain

Am I the only one who gets a slight Vonnegut vibe from this song?

First off, this song hasn't gotten old even after watching the video about 50 times a day since it's been released. I love how diverse The Matches are with each album they put out, and still get better each time.

This song to me has sort of a "environmental awareness" feel to it, especially in lines such as 'Ask the fox about progress they'll list what's been destroyed.', describing the home they live in. Nature. Shawn sings of the 'progress' we are trying to make to preserve the environment, but when we try to 'build a mountain', or save the Earth, we're just digging another hole that we will have to eventually fill to build yet another 'mountain'.

I'm sure everything in the song is just metaphorical, though. Oh well. The song is amazing.

Also, I believe he says... "Maybe a saint is just a dead prick with a good publicist."

and

"Ask the fox about progress they'll list whats been destroyed."

i don't quite see that environmental awareness you speak of. The lyrics are told in a mythological way, using animals to represent the characters of the story. I see this song as a comment on the media and how they cover up their stories so much, by creating so many holes, that it builds up mountains. One such event was the assassination of JFK. We're just digging holes by the grassy knoll. Thus 'the fox' intended to be the Fox network.. and it makes sense really: Maybe a wolf is not a devil he just plays one on TV Maybe a cuban bay stay leaves you less than overjoyed Ask the fox about progress they'll say what's been destroyed

yeah, thats what I got out of it. the fox being the fox networking.

Honestly, I hope they don't mean that the fox network only highlights the bad parts of the news, because thats not true at all, I think cnn and msnbc are the worst networks ever, their so biased it's pathetic.

I hope they hit it big with the new album. These boys deserve it so much.

first off i just have to say that this has to be one of the best songs by the matches. and i can't wait for the album to come out

as for what the song means it seems pretty clear that "the fox" is the fox network. i think that the second verse is about the iraq war. methadone is what rehab centers use to get heroine addicts off it and that our addiction to oil is as bad heroine addiction. "we'll all go green in desert shades of camouflage" seems to say we'll move away from oil to a better source of fuel as the war continues. as for "Go ask the bloodhounds till they find the mirage" seems to refere to why we got into this war and our hunt for WMDs and terrorists.

the third verse seems to be commenting about the media and that everything we see isn't as it seems.

as for the line "Go ask the frog what the scorpion knows" referes to the saying where the frog and the scorpion are enemies. and that seems to be toungue in cheek about asking one enemy about the other.
