Prodigal Son Lyrics

Oh can't you feel the nostalgia son I wonder about ya
Modernistocrat Horatio Alger
Clever never hesitating in the baiting ever waiting
For the canticle of manacles abating
Do you ever forget - you had a regret - and what you only guessed at
Might still be waiting?

When the prodigal son with a caroming shadow of hate comes to land at home
Well he's a mourning star with a champagne heart at his curtain call
And father never understood just how the work gets done
Don't look at me, no I ain't one, no prodigal son
Don't look at me, no I ain't one, no prodigal son

When everybody about - is read to bout you - about controversial values
Don't you think you better readdress the level of the cowardice rising to drown you
Did you ever connect - or come to reject - or even inspect
That dream that hounds you

When the prodigal son with a caroming shadow of hate comes to land at home
Well he's a mourning star with a champagne heart at his curtain call
And father never understood just how the work gets done
Don't look at me, no I ain't one, no prodigal son
Don't look at me, no I ain't one, no prodigal son

When you least expect it he's going to run
Like the blood red path of the western sun oh yeah
The prodigal son is waiting, waiting for his moment to come

Well hell no, don't look at me
Can't you see, I ain't one, no prodigal son
Don't look at me, no I ain't one, no prodigal son

The last line of verse two is "the dreams that hound you." Horatio Alger was an author who wrote stories about people turn their lives around from being poor to rich.

How is this a rip off of The Decline? NOFX has tons of respect for Bad Religion, they always have.

I was just kidding... it's similar though in "no i ain't one, no prodigal sooooooooon"

Brett song?

I think so. It sounds like a Brett song, anyway.

they rhyming scheme in the first verse ("clever never hesitating in the bating ever waiting for the canticle of manacles abaiting") sounds very Graffin-esque to me.

I haven't read any of Horatio Alger work so I am not really sure how he fits into it, but the rest of the song is the story of the prodigal son but from the other son's perspective. "Do you ever forget - you had a regret - and what you only guessed at Might still be waiting?" sums up the other brother's resentment for their father's acceptance of the prodigal son. Like he is wishing bad things on his brother.

Also the refrain of "Don't look at me, no I ain't one, no prodigal son" comes across to me in a very sarcastic tone again driving home the feelings of the other son.

The "no I ain't one, no prodigal son part" seems like a reference to CCR's Fortunate Son.

They ripped off NOFX's "The decline" Great Song

Prodigal means like, very wasteful. He is just emphasizing that he is not prodigal. The last three lines make it sound like being prodigal is a really shameful thing, so I think that the song it trying to persuade people to stop being wasteful.

Prodigal = Prodigy. A prodigy would mean that he follows in his father's footsteps. He's saying that he's not the one who does that.
