Sets Lyrics
Today is a slow day, and i'm playing guitar
til the day goes away,
Trying to write a song that says i love you
trying to let you know, i do
the dawn is bowing out, in the afternoon,
dawns on me now,
trying to write a song that says im tired,
of trying to get you
the night is a dark night, when it finally sets
and i'll make it out,
to seem like a wall it is, a little bit,
the better to see you with
til the day goes away,
Trying to write a song that says i love you
trying to let you know, i do
dawns on me now,
trying to write a song that says im tired,
of trying to get you
and i'll make it out,
to seem like a wall it is, a little bit,
the better to see you with

This song is amazing to me:
" Today is a slow day, and i'm playing guitar til the day goes away, Trying to write a song that says i love you trying to let you know, i do. trying to write a song that says im tired, of trying to get you."
I am at a loss for words, it's so perfect.
i always saw it as the progression of a relationship as compared to the day, a bit like the sphinx riddle, where it compares a life to the day.
in the dawn of the relationship, it's all pure love and it's easy. in the afternoon, it becomes difficult, and it 'dawns' on her that she's tired of it. in the night, at the end of it all, she sees that they are no longer right for each other.
Absolutely beautiful. This song, in my opinion, totally and perfectly captures the situation where you really love somebody but don't know how to tell them. Definitely one of my favorite songs ever.
Like others have said this is a song about love in it's purest form but it's also accompanied by the fear of actually telling a loved one. The second verse really changes the tone of the song when the writer makes a sudden realization that he/she is in fact tired of chasing someone who is clearly unavailable either literally, emotionally, or physically.
The end is a little harder to interpret. But I think it's really a reflection of acceptance and realizing that this situation will pass.
"to seem like a wall it is, a little bit, the better to see you with "
The tone of the song changes again to a wishing and remembering state. That she'll likely not see him or ever have the close relationship that's desired but maybe it's better that way because one's imagination is often better than the real thing.
