We Came to Dance Lyrics

We are the last of the jukebox Romeos.
We are romantics by the light of the fourway.
We came to sing out a chorus,
Reinvent the good times.
And to bring it all back home again.

Honey we came to dance with the girls with the stars in their eyes.
Do the jump back Jack stop and slide to the right.
Never break their hearts,
Never make them cry, so come on.
Strike up the band with a song that everybody knows.
If I'm not your kind then don't tell a soul.
I'm not the one who hates being alone,
So come on.

And in this unstable arena,
Of whats left or become of my America.
I'm asking this dance,
So come take my hand, come on
And in this unstable arena,
Of whats left or become of my America.
I'm asking this dance,
So come take my hand, come on

Honey we came to dance with the girls with the stars in their eyes.
Do the jump back Jack stop and slide to the right.
Never break their hearts,
Never make them cry, come on.
Strike up the band with a song that everybody knows.
If I'm not your kind then don't tell a soul.
I'm not the one who hates being alone,
So come on.

And if they end it all,
By the end of tonight,
If the big bomb drops down,
Over this quiet Edison sky.
We'll blow one last kiss,
To all the beautiful nights like this,
Under these central Jersey sky.

Honey we came to dance with the girls with the stars in their eyes.
Do the jump back Jack stop and slide to the right.
Never break their hearts,
Never make them cry, so come on.
Honey, strike up the band with a song that everybody knows.
If I'm not your kind then don't tell a soul.
I'm not the one who hates being alone,
So come on.

Cause you ain't never had a night on the town,
Like I could show you such a night on the town.
You ain't never had a song you could sing.
It's a deep dark night,
I hear you, I been there,
And these are the songs that we sing.
These are the songs that we sing.
You never seen a two step,
Like when you seen it from your Mama's house,
Where the kids flash like lightning,
to the very best dancers around.
We learned from the very best dancers around.
We learned from the very best dancers in town.
Come take my hand.
Mama, we came to dance.

Also, I believe it's "Strike up the Badlands song that everybody knows"

Badlands is a song by Bruce Springsteen. And if you've ever been to a Springsteen show, you know that everybody does indeed know it.

Upon getting to know this song better I realize I was wrong about this. But I think "Badlands song" would have worked in the song just as well. Alas, Brian did not write it that way. Oh well. Still a fantastic song.

I'm pretty sure that it's "Strike up the band, play a song that everybody knows," going along with the theme of just having a good time with everybody around. Badlands could easily be one of those songs, but I get the feeling that this means more of a song that even if people don't know everything about it, it'll be a song that everybody can enjoy, not just a song that speaks to one person.

The song I imagine them striking up the band with would probably be Don't Stop Believing by Journey. I mean, come on. Have...

My Opinion

I heard this song three days ago now, and it quickly took the spot in my heart of my favorite song. It's just a genuinely fun, beautiful tale of a man who wants to have a good time with somebody else, and if that's the last night they'll get to have fun on, it'll be just fine, and there's nothing left to do but blow one last kiss to the past, and move along with nothing but fond memories.

Another fantastic line would be "If I'm not your type, then don't tell a soul." It's part of his plans to get everybody around him to get in on the fun, and not care if they wouldn't make a good pair in the long run. Even if that happens, they can still have a smashing time.

I don't know why, but whenever I hear this song, I imagine a sort of outdoor seating restaurant, bar, or cafe with a brick dance floor outside. A waist-high white metal fence surrounds the seating area, and anybody can get in if they want, even if they aren't getting anything. A small local band is playing, sometimes just improvising, making some fun music anybody can enjoy, but once everybody gets up dancing, having a great time, they always fall back to "a song that everybody knows."

I'm guessing Fallon pulled the line from Springsteen's song, though, since he's a Jersey guy. He probably knew the history of it though. Sometimes I think he uses too many allusions and he's just piecing together other songs into one. Still love it though. And when you hear it, and know where it's from, it's like you're in the know. This song just spells Rock N' Roll to me. It's like "Hey we're not hear to bemoan our celebrity, break guitars, ruin dressing rooms, we came to dance and have a good time." If that's not your bag, there's the door. THE GLA to me is just a good band bringing back rock for Rock's sake. Rock and roll, to me, is only meant to be rock and roll. Fun, loud, and a party. Not drugs, destruction and anger. Maybe angst, or justified indignation, but not screaming.

"In this unstable arena, of what's left, or become of my America..." wooo, powerful.

"Jump Back Jack" is a reference to the song "Thundercrack" by Bruce Springsteen.

Cover art for We Came to Dance lyrics by Gaslight Anthem, The

"Jump Back Jack" is from the 1965 James Brown song, "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" and is likely the name of a dance from the 60's and that would be what is referenced in both this song and the Bruce Springsteen song.
