Shake it off
Pick yourself up, they say
Your life fell apart in your hands, and you've got the scars to prove it
It's not the first time, and they're getting deeper

Pull it together
Button up your shirt
Roll down those sleeves
Don't let them see how you've coped
It's not the first time, and they're getting deeper

More and more your demeanor looks like quicksand
More and more your demeanor looks like quicksand
It seems like your giving up, giving up on everything you worked for
It seems like your giving up, giving up on everything you worked for

It's pulling you under
It's gripping around your throat
It's pulling you under
It's gripping around your throat
It seems like your giving up on everything
It seems like your giving up on everything

It's pulling you under
(It's pulling you under)

Life can be overwhelming
But don't turn your back on the strongest crutch you've ever had
(You've ever had)
They have always been there to brace your fall
Wave goodbye to the past
You've got your whole life to lead
Wave goodbye to the past
You've got your whole life to lead
Wave goodbye to the past
You've got your whole life to lead
Wave goodbye to the past
You've got your whole life to lead
You've got your whole life to lead
You've got your whole life to lead
It's time to gain some ground

The meaning is obvious: life is hard for everyone, but you have to be strong; you have to pull through. "Roll down those sleeves. Don’t let them see how you’ve coped" is referring to self-mutilation. why else would one need to roll up their sleeves to hide how they coped? drug addiction? Puncture wounds aren't that noticeable. This has nothing to do with "emo"...it's just an example everyone...chill. The crutch is referring to God. He is the strength that has always been there. Not drugs or alcohol, why would ABR suggest their use as a crutch? This song is about getting through life with the help of God. The past will be forgiven through Him.

I believe that the reference to scars and self-harm is both symbolic and literal, because of this line: "Button up your shirt. Roll down those sleeves. Don't let them see how you've coped."

It's not just "emo"s that cut themselves, that's quite stereotypical.

I agree that this song is just about getting through hard times and getting on with life. It also makes a reference to not turning your back on God and your faith: "Life can be overwhelming, but don't turn your back on the strongest crutch you've ever."

Though it could also be talking about friends: "They have always been there to brace your fall."

I think the video is also symbolic, because it shows the man being beaten up, and it turns out that it's himself beating himself up. It's suggesting that the man is his own worst enemy, and again referencing self-harm or abuse.

At least that's my take on it.

    My Opinion

to me the lyrics suggest it is about someone with a drug addiction. "your life fell appart in your hands and you got the scars to prove it." "Roll down those sleeves.Don't let them see how you've coped." Sounds like he is talking about "tracks" (scars from needle use) from using drugs. "more and more your demeanor looks like quicksand" sound like a description of how people can look when on drugs such as heroin. "don't turn your back on the strongest crutch you have ever had. they have always been there to brace your fall" that line sounds like he is refering to family and/or friends.

Amazing song. Its meaning is very clear. A lot of people say its about drug addiction, or cutting yourself etc. the truth is.....they're all right. Its about overcoming the pain in your life, and to stop beating yourself up over it.

The music video for this song is perfect.

It shows the band, with dirt smudged over them

(symbolizing the fact that they've picked themselves up from the dirt, started to move on from some kind of struggle.)

Then you see a guy walking along an old dusty trail, only to be pursued and beaten by two similarily dressed men...after the beating, the man wakes up in a small cell. He starts to lose it, starts to really give up. Then one of the guys that beat him, comes into the cell, and gives him some water.

(Now...what a lot of you may not have noticed, is the guys that were beating him, and the guy that gave him the water, are all the same person! you can see his face when he goes to give him the water. So obviously, this symbolizes that all along, The guy was only beating himself up. Feeling sorry for himself. When he is handed the water, that symbolizes the fact that hes starting to get a grip, hes moving on from the past and ready to pick himself up. Hes done beating himself up.)

So you see, this song can relate to anyone, and everyone. I know it certainly relates to me...a lot of shit has been happening in my life, but Im not going to let it bring me down. Whenever the past starts to creep up, I turn this song on full blast. It always picks me up.

Probably the most controversial line of the song is:

"But don't turn your back on the strongest crutch you've ever had. They've always been there to break your fall"

I believe that the crutch, is refering to YOURSELF. don't turn your back on yourself. When everyone else fails, YOU are all you have left. YOU always end up the strongest in the end.

"They" could also be refering to yourself as well. In the video, there were two guys beating the other guy up. Since they are all the same person, "They've always been there to break your fall", probably means "No matter what happens, you are the only one who never goes away. In the end, you are always there to break your fall."

Thats what I believe it means.

Probably the greatest song ABR has made yet, as far as the message of the song goes.

I can guarantee you all of thier songs dont reflect god. They are Christian but they don't limit themselves to that topic. I find a reoccuring theme of heroin addiction in most of messengers and some of constellations and thrill seeker. I believe a close friend, maybe even a sister, of the writer is struggling with heroin. Check out this song, up against the ropes, too late for roses, thirty and seven, chasing the dragon, black sheep, and god so many others and tell me I'm wrong. Being a Christian band doesnt mean every song has to be about god, dont get me wrong they have a lot of songs that are very religious but they have a wide variety of subjects they write about. I live and breathe this band and have analyzed every song theyve written and I hope you dont just look at it and say its about god, dissect it further and try to find out the deeper meaning of the writer. Im not saying you cant take each song as being about god and bringing someone closer to god, but just put a little more effort into analyzing than "all their songs reflect god"

I think "scars" just refers to all of the bad things (emotional and physical) that have happened in the person's life. So I don't think it's about a suicidal person, just an apathetic one who seems to be "giving up on everything." The song is just telling that person to move on with his or her life.

amazing song. amazing lyrics. its talking about that you're struggling with life, you might cut yourself, "scars are getting deepter/roll down those sleeves" so they cant see the cut marks. ABR is saying that they know life is hard, but you gotta be strong and focus on the future, not the past

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
