Whole Lot Of Leavin' Lyrics
It’s pretty cold for late September
The autumn wind is creeping in
The summer sun packed up it’s long gone
There’s a whole lot of leavin’ going on
I bet it’s warm in California
I think it’s time to hit the road
I just might call that band of gypsies
Go searching for our pout of gold
Seems like lately there’s a whole lot of leavin’ going on
I close my eyes and picture your hand in mine
I still hear your voice
It takes me back to that time
Where I could find a reason to be strong
Seems like lately there’s a whole lot of leavin’ going on
Close the window draw the curtains
You ain’t the only one here hurtin’
No one’s right, no one’s wrong
Lately there’s a whole lot of leavin’ going on
I close my eyes
And picture your hand in mine
I still hear your voice
It takes me back to that time
Where I could find a reason to be strong
Seems like lately there’s a whole lot of leavin’ going on
You used to live to say you love me
Now you got one foot out the door
It’s then you turn around and ask me
Do we got it anymore
I close my eyes and picture your hand in mine
I still hear your voice
It takes me back to that time
When I need a reason to be strong
I close my eyes and picture your hand in mine
I walk the line you’ll never hear me sayin’ goodbye
So pretty baby please be strong
Seems like lately there’s a whole lot of leavin’ going on
I’ll come back for you baby
The autumn wind is creeping in
The summer sun packed up it’s long gone
There’s a whole lot of leavin’ going on
I think it’s time to hit the road
I just might call that band of gypsies
Go searching for our pout of gold

I like a lot of Bon Jovi's new stuff. This song is pretty good, too. It's pretty simplistic but rather meaningful.
Hmmm, perhaps this song is about Richie and Heather's marriage falling apart?
Jon Bon Jovi wrote it about Richie Sambora, not Richie and Heather; he said it himself.

"I bet it's warm in California" - although Richie has a house in Jersey, he lives in California a lot of the time so this is just a reference to that fact.

"That band of gypsies" he sings about could be the band Bon Jovi themselves, I think - pointing out that they're never at home.

If you watch the video, that explains pretty well that the song is about Jon and Richie's relationship...basically, the song refers to Richie's recent struggles with alcohol and his divorce, and how depressed he was...on a simple level, it's Jon showing his devotion to his best friend and telling him "you'll never hear me say goodbye."
Jon said that he hated watching his best friend "going through hell" so this song is a piece of encouragement to Richie ("pretty baby, please be strong.") It also demonstrates the incredibly strong and close bond they have ("I close my eyes and picture your hand in mine.")
"When I need a reason to be strong" - again, simply underlining how much Jon and Richie rely on and care for each other.
The line "lately there's a whole lot of leavin' going on" does refer to Richie's marriage break-up and the divorces people they know have been through, but the song is actually comparing the strength of Jon and Richie's friendship to these broken relationships.
Jon has said he wrote this one for Richie. He was going through a divorce and custody battle, and his dad was dying. The video is beautiful. Check it out.
kait25 is correct.
Jon did write this for Richie and those horrible things he was going through.
I love this song. Terrific lyrics and foot tapping beat.
"I close my eyes and picture you're hand in mine. I still hear your voice, it takes me back to that time."
I love that lyric.
