Waterline Lyrics
I just sit there
And let the thoughts flood
And I remind myself, "It's all right, it's all good, it's all love"
It's not though
Cause there's a kink in the armor
A pot hole I'm sinking in
While I think of the drama
So I stand up
Start to pace in my living room
Set my eye to the highway knowing that I'll play chicken soon
There's a vanity plate with my name on it
There's a Davey Crockett hat with a Masonic fat cat under it
A musket rifle spitting at my feet
They want me to dance in the middle of the street
And I respect my elders, so I do as I'm told
But I offset the bell curve when I do it with soul
Losing control
Guilty feet do have rhythm
They just dance to the wrong theme music to amuse the villain
Instead of killing, I'll spare the raccoon
And start filling sandbags as I stare at the moon and let the thoughts flood
Blessed are those who are dammed
When the levee broke
How many choked on the steps to a slow dance?
A staircase to a hug with no hands
Accountability hung out to dry on the line of command
We let the thoughts flood
We remind ourselves "It's all right, it's all good, it's all love"
It's not though
Cause there's a kink in the armor
A pot hole I'm sinking in
Sharing a drink with my father
It's a family affair
The vanity we share
The waterline is rising
All we do is stand there
And let the thoughts flood
And I remind myself, "It's all right, it's all good, it's all love"
It's not though

my interpitation: this song relates to human moralaty. we live our lives the way we want without thinking about who or what we affect. and our evil ways will catch up to us slowly but surely {karma} (waterline is rising all we do is stand there) i.e.; polution/global warming, slavery ect.
I'm thinking this is about New Orleans, anyone else agree?
This song is so excellent, the music I mean, I don't think they're is much hope for me to understand his lyrics, but it is good, nonetheless. I thought the Waterline was just a metaphor, not literal, flood or whatever else, but like I said, I really don't know. I thought maybe, like, he was drowning in something?
Great music, easy to listen to.
hm,,i kinda agree on the New Orleans thing,, but,,when i listen to it,,and FEEL the lyrics for myself,,i think about how i've had a hard time standing up for myself,,and,,i always leave when things get too fucked up..kinda like i,, just stand there and watch the waterline rise,,and devour those i've turned away from,,hehe,,but thats just me,, i've also tried to make a painting with this song,,and it turned out quite nice..hehe,,listen to sage,,and respect the mind,,i dreamt i had his..MIND once,,woke up feeling talentless:P haha,, i'm tired,,,goodnight,, peace
Lol yeah there's a meaning for this in each one of us, but I can see the New Orleans catastrophe here as well.
The waterline is rising All we do is stand there
This song is touching.. amazing.
You can see the song however you want it to be. It could be to do with New Orleans or Himself. I think it's important where he says " WE let the thoughts flood/ WE remind ourselves" Earlier on it's I... Theres got to be some meaning there, i just can't pick it out.
Beautiful song, sage is a lyrical genius. Crack Pipes has to be one of my favourites...
Take care Phil
I hate that anyone would ever relate this song to Katrina. There's only two different things that could possible relate to that if you interpreted it incredibly literally which is "levee broke" and "waterline is rising"
Nothing is ever as it seems in Sage's song's. He's brilliant.
Well, Sage actually didn't write this song; a dude from Huntington named Chris Mays wrote this song, and it is not about Katrina. It's actually about his relationship with his super-fundie parents and their disdain for his very different politics and morals.
How do I know? Eh, he's sort of my boyfriend. :p
I just watched Pride and Glory, a movie that plays this song at its end credits, and the credits said, "Written by Sage Francis and Mark Isham".

I think it's supposed to be a skin-deep Katrina reference, but a much more complex allegory under the surface.
this song obviously relates to NO, but as with every Sage song EVERY LINE is a metaphor for something else.
"I just sit there and let the thoughts flood... The waterline is rising and all we do is stand there"
This song isn't referring only to N.O., but every time someone feels something is wrong, and instead of acting on it, they just 'stand there' and let the 'thoughts flood'.
It's time to act, and take a stand.. on whatever situation you feel strongly about.
