I Was Married Lyrics

I married in the sun (tell me where tell me where)
Against the stone of buildings built before
You and I were born (start again start again)
To my heart confusion rose against
The muscles fought so long (fought so long)

To control against the pull of one
Magnet to another magnet to another
Magnet

Now we look up in (tell me who tell me who)

To the eyes of bullies breaking backs
They seem so very tough (it's a lie it's a lie)
They seem so very scared of us
I look into the mirror (look into)
For evil that just does not exist
I don't see what they see (tell them that tell them that)

Try to control the pull of one
Magnet to another magnet to another
Magnet to another magnet to another

"I’ve read that ‘I Was Married’ is about gay marriage. What made you write about that? Sara went through a lot this year. She and her partner, who is American, decided to apply for permanent (Canadian) residency as common law partners. She said there was a moment while they were filling out the paperwork where she thought, ‘It feels like we’re getting married!’ That’s what prompted her to write the song.

I don’t want to speak for her, but I think Sara was reflecting on how she was experiencing this genuinely amazing feeling of loving another person while also realizing there’s this whole part of the world that doesn’t approve of her relationship."

that's from an interview tegan had with gaydarradio.com

Sara and Emy did get a common law marriage, they had ben dating for 5 years. This song also makes references to people who don't accept gay marriage, or gayness in general. Sadly, her and Emy have broke up since then.

Sara and Emy were declared commonlaw married. I read that somewhere. They were together for 5 years.

And the song is basically saying that she sees not the evil that everyone seems to see when they look at gays. She's talking about not understanding homophobia ETC.

It's beautiful. I adore this song. It helps me a lot.

have to agree with abi999 here, it's pretty clear.

"to my heart confusion rose against" and "the muscles fought so long to control against the pull of one magnet to another magnet" are about denying one's own attraction to others.

the "they" are those who are homophobic and disdainful.

I believe this song is about a homosexual relationship... I think when she sings, "they seem so very scared of us" and "I look into the mirror for evil that just does not exist I don’t see what they see." She is talking about how a lot of people don't accept them for being lesbians. Like "they" (the people who are "scared" of them) see evil while she (Tegan and Sara) see just a regular person, which is right. I believe homosexual people are just like straight people. Being gay myself, I applaud Tegan and Sara for writing this song. It makes a bold statement.

i agree with above. and also the lyrics "try to control the pull of one magnet to another magnet to another magnet to another magnet to another"

are saying they can't help who they are attracted to and that you can't change someone for being "gay". you can't control the pull of one magnet to another (attraction).

i heard the lyrics as "try to control the pull of one madness to another madness etc" and i thought they were possibly referring to going from one drama to the next, and that small part of us that likes the dramas in our lives, and trying to control it.
