i love the first "i wish youd say please dont leave me"... like he's just fully realizing the extent of his wife's betrayal... how much he didnt mean to her the moment she decided to cheat on him. the more i listen to this CD, the more i have to say about it. its beautiful.

second song on the cd.. after the sailor found his wife cheating on him with his brother he realises hes going away for 3 years.. he does not say anything to his wife about it just says goodbye. even tho he wont be able to talk or communicate with his wife or anybody to tell them how he feels.. hes set on sailing and following his captains word nand living for his captain the next 3 years

i believe he is refrencing the songs that he writes "three hole punched fake scripture", and that God means more to him than any of songs he has written.

i think this whole song is about how all the gigs and shows and thats are his ultimate goal in life still fall short unless he is are following where God leads him.

He's not talking about God. The wording is kind of confusing. It'd be like he was saying, "But, God, You mean more to me." The word God is a pause, like its hard to find the words because the feeling is so intense. Its like "But, damn, you mean more to me, than any three hole punched fake scripture could come from me." It is talking about writing though. Cause in "Captain I'm Fine, and Thank You for Everything." He talks about how he still writes. Its just saying he loves his wife more than anything he could possibly put on the page.

Call me an idiot but I cannot understand the lines "god you mean more to me than any 3 hole punch fake scripture could come from me" and "a middle sized fake show you lead me to" fake show? can anyone explain these to me?!

haha i agree heather! love this song poignancy of 'i wish you'd say please don't leave me' is gorgeous it's a sad thing, to not be missed when you are missing

I always saw the captain as a metaphor for his artistic ambitions, his drive to make music and express himself. I'm not sure if the whole album fits this interpretation, but I think this song fits pretty well. He's trying to balance his desire for happiness and companionship with his desire to be a great artist, which requires him to be lonely and to explore his unhappiness.
