I think the message is that when you follow things blindly you can never keep up because what's cool one day won't be cool tomorrow. You have to think for yourself and not give in to trends and falsifications of the way your life should be. In some ways, too, I think it's about criticism of the band and how they just don't give a fuck about "following the leader" and being seen as popular.
