The Cold, the Dark, and the Silence Lyrics

Don't you lie and lie to me
that you're not afraid, my love
I know you well enough to know
you can't be alone

If you were to roll, to roll down your window
you'd find the wind, the ice, the trees
that sway like skeletons outside

But when the cold, the dark, and the silence come
it's like a sudden rush of water through your heart and lungs

Please don't fight, don't fight with me
and fold your arms like it's the end
Can you smell the sweetness of the soil and snow in the wind?

So we're lost, we're lost out here on the plains, my love
It's only wind and ice and trees that wave from above

But when the cold, the dark, and the silence come
it's like a sudden rush of water through your heart and lungs

When the cold, the dark, and the silence come
it's like a sudden rush of water through your heart and lungs

Don't lie
Don't cry
It's over
It's only
the leaves
the trees
I'll never leave you alone
In this car
In the dark, with the air getting so much colder
It's so clear outside here, in the moon and winter air

But when the cold, the dark, and the silence come
it's like a sudden rush of water through your heart and lungs

When the cold, the dark, and the silence come
it's like a sudden rush of water
it's like a sudden rush of water
it's like a sudden rush of water through your heart and lungs

The cold, the dark and the silence
The cold, the dark and the silence
The cold, the dark and the silence
The cold, the dark and the silence
The cold, the dark and the silence
The cold, the dark and the silence...

The rhythm in this lyrics of this song is fantastic.

This song makes me think of running a car off a cliff into a lake, with the inhabitants drowning as the car sinks. The cold, dark, and silence are death, and Sea Wolf uses drowning as a metaphor for it.

I see how you might thing it's about drowning, given that he talks about water rushing into you're lungs, but that's really much too straight forward, and it usually doesn't snow near the coast anyway. I don't really feel like analyzing this song right now, which I know is the point of the site but whatever.

I will say, however, that the song has a very mocking tone to it. Or at least that's what I get. He's telling her he'll protect her and stuff, but he's also pointing out how afraid she is, and how her fear is silly (sorry, it's not necesarily a her). He throws in the "my love" for good measure.

It did seem a little teasing that way, it almost hit me as cruel at first. It's a very interesting song!

I know that this isn't in all actuality what this song is probably about, but to me, it's about a person with panic disorder. The first verse, about not being able to be alone and the part about a rush of water to the lungs- that is what panic feels like. It sounds like he is trying to comfort this girl/guy, and get her/him through it.

They're lost and stuck on a snowy winter day on a plain. Perhaps they've been there several days waiting for help. She's saying she's not afraid, but he knows she is afraid of him dying first and leaving her alone, so he's going to help her out of that situation by killing her first so that she won't be left there to die alone after he dies.

I think its about a relantionship ending, the girl is too afraid to be alone, despite her arguing. He knows well enough she cant face pain and or her fears alone, that despite things ending he will still be there for her , I also think he is saying once she deals with her fears and any pain she may be going through, she will see how freeing it is after ( by washing away her pain/fears)

this is by far one of my most favorite songs by Sea wolf, it can be interpreted in many ways , this was just my first thoughts when i first heard the song.

My Interpretation

I think this song is about death. Someone got stranded in the snow with the night approaching. They keep telling themselves they aren't scared, to keep up their own morale, but in reality they are terrified. Death is closing in, it's getting colder and the person most likely won't make it through the night.

A supportive spirit of nature (or death) is trying to comfort the person, telling them it's ok, they aren't alone and dying isn't really an end. Stop being afraid of what's next, open the window and enjoy the scents and sounds of nature, think of how sweet the soil and snow smell. Go peacefully instead of fighting something that can't be stopped. People don't stop to enjoy nature, they're too busy worrying about anything and everything. Spend your last moments enjoying something beautiful.

The spirit is saying the sudden feeling of water rushing through the heart and lungs will be what death feels like after everything goes dark. It's kind of giving the person a heads up so they won't be in a panic in the last second of their life.

The end of the song is the person succumbing to the cold and finally dying.

My Interpretation

A literal interpretation of the song sounds like a couple lost in the woods. The environment seems foreign to them or at least the partner that is upset and won't get out of the car. The partner is upset and scared at the singer for getting them lost in the woods but the singer doesn't care that they're lost becquwe he is just enjoying the the fresh air and moonlight. He embraces the solitude of the wilderness and wants his partner to feel what he's feeling but she won't. A more metaphoric interpretation makes me think of someone coming to terms with death. The way he says the trees sway like skeletons in the sky. It makes me almost think of someone that's committed suicide. The partner feel alone and is upset with the other for feeling like they've left them and the singer, the one that died, is trying to console them and tell them they haven't left them. I just think it's something to do with how he romanticizes the feeling of water filling your lungs and succumbing to cold, dark and silence. I really love this song and how beautiful it is. I always imagine a couple where the boyfriend has died as they walk through a forest. Him leading the way. It always makes me cry, but in a good way.
