The Devil Cried Lyrics
One fine day in Hell
The master told a story
Someone lied so well
He sent him back to Glory
There are whispers between the screams
That this deed can be done
Even sinners must dream
And I can be the one to make the Devil cry
I can win this game
If all things come together
I know this sounds quite strange
I won't be smart, just clever
It's the law on the other side
Just the kill lets you run
And how many have tried?
I know I'll be the one to make the Devil cry
At last my time has come
I must not give him pleasure
I can be the one
One chance or burn forever
So I told him about my pain
And the life I've been through
He just smiled and the laughter came
Then I told him that I love you, and the Devil cried
Tears from his eyes
Eyes of fire
And the Devil cried
The master told a story
Someone lied so well
He sent him back to Glory
That this deed can be done
Even sinners must dream
And I can be the one to make the Devil cry
If all things come together
I know this sounds quite strange
I won't be smart, just clever
Just the kill lets you run
And how many have tried?
I know I'll be the one to make the Devil cry
I must not give him pleasure
I can be the one
One chance or burn forever
And the life I've been through
He just smiled and the laughter came
Then I told him that I love you, and the Devil cried
Eyes of fire
And the Devil cried

It seems to me this is a song about how to escape hell.
The protagonist is clearly in hell (first line), and he wants to escape, but he has one chance (or burn forever). It's been rumored how it can be done (there are whispers between the screams that this deed can be done) and that someone has escaped hell before (Jesus - who returned to Glory).
So, the time comes, and the singer tells the Devil about his sad life (which makes the Devil laugh) and then he says "I love you", which makes the Devil cry - which is presumably part of the escape plan.
Who the "I love you" is directed to is a tricky one. Is it to the Devil himself? Is it to God? Is it to a girl? Either way, I think the deal is that "love" defeats the Devil.
It's the law on the other side Just a tear lets you run And though many have tried I know I'll be the one to make the Devil cry
-that's how the song actually goes
The song is not about the story of cutting hell. The part about getting out of hell is great, but that really is not what the song is about. The song is about the power of the words 'I love you.' And how saying them to some one, may just change their life for the better.
I know it changed mine for the better.
@darthmat , you know shit about Ronnie James Dio if you think that a genius who wrote DON;T TALK TO STRANGERS wrote a song about you and your insignificant love life.Ye, of little faith!

Neon Knight is the one who gost mostly right - in an interview Dio said that it's about a way to get out of hell, if you say something that makes the devil cry, he lets you go. So far only one achieved it and "was sent back to glory", it is implied that it was Jesus; now the protagonist approaches the devil and manages to make him cry... still, and Dio didn't explicitly tell this, I can't understand who is the "you" of the final line "then I told him that I love you"... was it God, because he was still loving God after a life of suffering? usually when shit happens you turn away from God... and the devil was about to smile because he was expecting something like "My life has been shit so I'm glad to serve you oh Satan", and instead he got a "I've got this horrible life, and still I love God" and then cried... because his attempt to corrupt a soul with all evil things proved useless...
"Someone lied so well" could fit with this theory - why this guy would be in hell if he loved God all his life through? he didn't, he lie, but he fooled the devil and made him cry...
Or, could it be that he loved the devil?? kinda like "Listen, I had this horrible life because of this and that, and for that, I thank you", making the devil cry because he wants people to suffer, not to enjoy suffering?
Any other theories about "then I told him that I love you"?
For all we know, the protagonist could be singing to God...
its about some1 trying to defeat the devil
When i saw this song live on the Heaven and Hell tour Dio said it was about if you could make the devil cry that that would be your ticket to get into heaven, or something like that. i also think when he says "i love you" hes refering to either a lover or sabbath fans.
it says "someone lied so well he sent them back to glory" so i guess the "i love you" thing could be the lie that got him out of hell, or something. i'm just spitballing here.
i love this song!!! Dios back!!!!
its an easy song to interpret but its just this one part confuses me a bit:
So I told him about my pain And the life I've been through He just smiled and the laughter came Then I told him that I love you, and the Devil cried
why would he cry if he said "I love you"? I would seriously laugh my ass off if i were the devil, no one loves the devil lol!
yes it's pretty hard this song.I don't fuckin' know why he says " i love you" and if it's a lie.
It's prolly jesus, He's the only one that "made it out of there" BUT 1) why would jesus go to hell in the first place? Hmm maybe because he got all of our sins with him? hmm.
2) Why would jesus lie? Of course i don't see why jesus would "love" satan. Maybe respect him , yes. I dunno :/ I wish Dio could post a walkthrough :P :P :P
Still awsome song,
And i do agree that the word " i love you" is a powerfull one, but from what i've seen, it is indeed a lie...
