I recently saw Colin Hay in concert and he said he wrote this song about Jack Nicholson. He was star-struck with him but he kept slipping away and when Colin asked where he was a woman said, "Everybodys always looking for Jack."
About the Alter Ego (maybe represented by Jack Nicholson's on screen character). You want to be cool, but you are a second-hander.
I agree with beeny. Even jack is looking for jack. Not unlike the Ed Norton character always looking for Brad Pitt in Fight Club. Its really him (his alter ego), but its the imagined side of him he wants to be.
