This song. Is about going backwards. And how beautiful it can be. It's about what happens when you let yourself slip into a moment in the past, with someone you still care about - after a lot of time has passed. And old feelings stir up and the bittersweet memories of times from the past...and you get lost in the moment with someone you loved...
This happened to me and my ex. We were together, just like it was described in the song, and we made a memory.
Even thought it happened, we knew our relationship was just never going to work. And that was the last time I saw him.

Richie even said in some parts of the song he thinks about his daughter.
I love the sentiment of this song. Rather than just doing something that will soon be forgotten, he suggests taking a chance and creating a new memory. Of course, in this song, it's a bit more complicated than that, because they already have old memories from a past together, as well as new obligations to others.
Think of all the times that we act conservatively in order to do the right thing. This song deals with the tension between not wanting to rock the boat and the desire to rock it at the risk of sinking it. Bon Jovi suggests rocking it - well, of course, he's a rock star!
this is a beautiful song i think its about two childhood friends who are both unaware of each others feelings and this is what they are thinking one night that they want to spend it together the lyrics are sweet and well written i think this would make a lovely duet with jon and a woman
I believe this is about the singer meeting up with a ex and they both obviously still fel something for eachother but now both have moved on and feel awkward.

The part about "your phone is ringing I don't want to ask" makes it seem like the other person has new commitments. The singer doesn't want to know who she is with now... but he clearly wants to be with her. Such a perfect example of sexual tension.

It reminds me of my mom and her crazy relationship with her on again off again boyfriend of almost 20 years. The song plays out their life.
