Hot/Cold (Darling, Don't) Lyrics

You said your hope was lost.
My eyes were stinging hot.
The first of the tears to fall
hurts the worst of all.
I had it all planned out,
what I was going to say.
But then that lump in my throat
stole my words away.
Darling, if nothing else,
I know that this is true;
I'd have nobody if I don't have you.
But you said your hope was lost,
my eyes were stinging hot,
the first of the tears to fall...
Have you given too much away?
Are you giving us up?
Did the going get tough this time?
Don't give up on us.
I said, "look at the map on the wall,
put your fingers on where we are,
no matter where I go we're just an inch apart."
You interrupted and said,
"not that old speech again! -
If we're just an inch apart,
then reach out and grab my hand." -
Have you given too much away?
Are you giving us up?
Did the going get tough this time?
Don't give up on us,
don't give up...
I know that this is true,
at least it used to be,
you'd have nobody if you don't have me...
And didn't we say forever?
Didn't I promise you?
Didn't we say forever?
Darling don't...
darling, don't.
We didn't come this far just to throw it all away.
Have you given too much, Darling?
Are you giving us up?
Did the going get tough this time?
Don't give up on us.

oh god i love this song! The meaning of this is song is pretty simple. A couple that is about to break up. The one is giving up the other one asks to please not. Even though the meaning is simple, this song says so much! I'm in love over how they have used the words.. and i love the line 'no matter where you go, we're just an inch apart' Strata deserves more attention than their getting..

It sounds like a long-distance relationship, having heard the map bit. An inch could be any number of miles depending on the scale. Her rebuttal is that if he's really so close, he should be able to reach out and touch her. Perhaps she feels that he hasn't been there enough for her, or doubts the relationship because he's not there physically. (An "I'll believe it when I see it," kind of thing.) I say that, because I can't think of any reason she should respond so.. negatively, unless it was because it wans't possible. ;\

This also causes most of the chorous make sense; "Have you given too much away...Did the going get tough this time?" since it would be difficult to make time for this person if the only way to contact them is over the internet or phone, especially if the distance spans timezones.

I've actually grown to like this song more than Cocaine, one of their other songs. Strata did a great job on this song. The meaning isn't too hard to understand. To me, it seems that a couple is breaking up or in a rocky area in the relationship. The boyfriend is trying to make the long distance relationship work, but the girlfriend just wants to break up or for him to come home. That part wasn't quite as clear. Anyways, I can't wait for their new CD to come out.

Yeah, the meaning has been said already... And I believe that this is the writer's final plea to get this person to stay with them, even though the distance almost forbids that.

This song is really about Eric (singers) Wife,

"look at the map on the wall, put your fingers on where we are, no matter where I go we're just an inch apart."

That part is cause she lives in California and Eric was in LA and if you put your fingers on the map its only an inch apart.

I had the chance to talk to Eric about this song, cause this is my favorite song ever, means a lot to me.

this song means a lot to Eric too, sometimes he gets emotional on stage while preforming this track.
