Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
what does she mean by "i can't study war"? i always thought it was "i can't stand this war" so now i'm confused
She's quoting the old gospel song "Down by the Riverside". <br /> The chorus goes "I ain't go study war no more, study war no more, ain't go study war no more" and so on.

Lately been thinking about songs like this, and certain songs by (say) Paul Simon, and the like... and they appear to be crying out from the midst of the horrible spiritual darkness of (among other things) U.S.-in-Vietnam.
And so sad to have to reflect--yet again--of prophetic artists like this winning the moral battles while Americans bleat and quiver in faithless fear and elect jackasses that schlemiel them yet again.
It's one of the tragedies of being born a great artist in the U.S.A.
