The song was first released on the album Transcendental Highway in 1998, seven years before Best died (Christmas, 2005). It was re-released in tribute.
During a recent concert which I attended (9/22/2007), Colin prefaced this song by mentioning it was originally written about George Best -- the famous football/soccer player who died some years back. He did concede that this song could perhaps apply to himself as well. In any case, I love this song for its unabashed look backwards, without being schlocky or sticky. A brilliant feat in and of itself!
Colin Hay wrote this about his most well-known song - Down Under - which was a huge hit in the US and Australia in the 80s. Colin was the lead singer of Men At Work, and Down Under was their biggest song. It was almost a novelty song - just all about what it was to be an Aussie. So his brilliant feat is writing that song. Whenever he plays it live, he hears the crowd roar. Personally, I love the second verse - there's a touch of tiredness about it - esp that line, "you have to pay the play the world when it won't wait for you". Hmm.
daaazer, you're correct. Colin did indeed sing this song as a tribute to George Best, but as you both say it can also be applied to himself as well. Great song, as are all of Hay's songs!
Colin said that the song was originally about George Best ( daaazer) and it is definitely about his career. "A Jack to a King and Back" shows Colin's rise as a pothead from Australia to an international celebrity, which was shortlived.
