Dog and Pony Lyrics
Dog and pony
Empty our
Cabinet
You never forget
You never come back the same
Each time you go up in flames
Each time you begin to blame
You never come back the same
Just a little bit more love
Oh, a little bit more love
Just a little bit more love
For me
Just a little bit more love
Oh, a little bit more love
But it's alright
Don't cry
My sweet
You were born
Unto me
I'm torn
Unto me
I'm worn
Unto me
Unworn
So I danced my dance
And I kissed your hands
And I took a chance
And we fell into a trance
Just a little bit more love
Oh, a little bit more love
Just a little bit more love
For me
Just a little bit more love
Oh, a little bit more love
But it's alright
Don't cry
It's alright
Don't cry
It's alright
Don't cry
My sweet
Say one, two, three
One, two, three
One, two, three
You sitting on the rooftop
Me begging here on my knees
I stayed in love with you
You're just falling in love with me
And darling, you know that ain't right
So if love never lasts forever ever, ever
Little brother
Little lover
Twist these strings of fate
There is no clean slate
So I'm carting away
All of myself
In this metal crate
And my dog and my pony
And my empty file cabinet
You never forget
You never come back quite the same
Each time you go up in flames
Each time you begin to blame
You never come back quite the same
Just a little bit of true love
Oh, a little bit of true love
Just a little bit of true love
For me
Just a little bit more love
Oh, a little bit more love
But it's alright
Don't cry
It's alright
Don't cry
It's alright
Don't cry
My sweet
Empty our
Cabinet
You never forget
You never come back the same
Each time you go up in flames
Each time you begin to blame
You never come back the same
Oh, a little bit more love
Just a little bit more love
For me
Just a little bit more love
Oh, a little bit more love

here is how she introduces the song on the recording I have:
"This song is called 'Dog and Pony', and I heard the phrase somwhere, and I think I just, um, it was used in a cool context, but I completely changed the context, and I just like the sound of it"
I think that it is about really loving someone, but knowing that they can't love you back the same way, but not having the strength to stay away from them. She keeps wishing "just a little bit more love", because that might make it ok, and then when the other person can't deliver, she comforts them "But it's alright Don't cry It's alright Don't cry It's alright Don't cry My sweet"
Eventually, she realizes "there is no clean slate", so she has to get away and start over, with only her dog and pony to keep her company.
At the beginning, it's empty file cabinet, not empty our cabinet.
Anyway, I only recently heard this song, so I’m not quite sure what it's about, but it's beautiful and deserves some comments, so here's one.
What sticks out to me is the idea of not being about to start over in the true sense of the phrase. She says that there’s no clean slate and you never come back the same each time you up in flames (like a phoenix). You can start over from youth, like the phoenix, but the affects of your past will never be erased.
So the next line about blaming led me to think that the song is about the end of a relationship. The catalyst seems to have been a fight because of the line about blame. The narrator (I’ll say it’s a girl for simplicity) is leaving, having realized that things are over and that they can’t begin again because things just aren’t that simple. They’ve had a relationship and can’t simply rewind time to meet all over and do things right.
The verse about the dancing and the one about falling in love are probably memories from when the relationship began, but since it has gone sour now, they're separating.
Still, I see something hopeful in the song because she tells the other person to not cry. Maybe because they had a bit of true love and should be grateful for that. And the fact that it will never be erased may prevent them from starting all over, but it also means that they won’t ever forget what they’ve had.
Anyway, it’s a gorgeous song.
It's about the end of a relationship, she still wants it but he puts the blame on her, she leaves with her belongings (empty file cabinet meaning without blaming him, not having the "files") and taking her dog, while her pony carts it all and her away, but someday when he starts over, he'll realize and miss her, and will never fully be able to start over clean because he'll never forget her, and will realize he loves her now that she's gone
well, a dog and pony show is used in the sense of something meant to impress you, but is overlydone to the point of unimpressive
so I (personally) think this is a song about trying to impress someone, who maybe isn't impressed and starts to become annoyed or confused. I think they then start to feel bad though while the first person tries to convince the second person to love them with little inefficient (bad choice of words, but you understand) ways of showing off to them. But then I think they try to start over and put the attempts in the past, and it works except that the past where the first person tried so hard to impress the second is still there, just trying to be forgotten by both parties.
Can anybody tell me where they got her recording of this? This is one of the only songs of hers I don't have!
This song is beautiful, but the recording I have absolutely sucks.
Does anyone know a decent one? Is there more than one recording of this?
Where do these songs come from?! Share the love, people!
love it!
