well, a dog and pony show is used in the sense of something meant to impress you, but is overlydone to the point of unimpressive
so I (personally) think this is a song about trying to impress someone, who maybe isn't impressed and starts to become annoyed or confused. I think they then start to feel bad though while the first person tries to convince the second person to love them with little inefficient (bad choice of words, but you understand) ways of showing off to them.
But then I think they try to start over and put the attempts in the past, and it works except that the past where the first person tried so hard to impress the second is still there, just trying to be forgotten by both parties.
