"The Call" as written by and Regina Spektor....
It started out as a feeling
Which then grew into a hope
Which then turned into a quiet thought
Which then turned into a quiet word
And then that word grew louder and louder
'Til it was a battle cry
I'll come back
When you call me
No need to say goodbye
Just because everything's changing
Doesn't mean it's never been this way before
All you can do is try to know who your friends are
As you head off to the war
Pick a star on the dark horizon
And follow the light
You'll come back when it's over
No need to say goodbye
You'll come back when it's over
No need to say goodbye
Now we're back to the beginning
It's just a feeling and no one knows yet
But just because they can't feel it too
Doesn't mean that you have to forget
Let your memories grow stronger and stronger
'Til they're before your eyes
You'll come back
When they call you
No need to say goodbye
You'll come back
When they call you
No need to say goodbye
Which then grew into a hope
Which then turned into a quiet thought
Which then turned into a quiet word
And then that word grew louder and louder
'Til it was a battle cry
I'll come back
When you call me
No need to say goodbye
Just because everything's changing
Doesn't mean it's never been this way before
All you can do is try to know who your friends are
As you head off to the war
Pick a star on the dark horizon
And follow the light
You'll come back when it's over
No need to say goodbye
You'll come back when it's over
No need to say goodbye
Now we're back to the beginning
It's just a feeling and no one knows yet
But just because they can't feel it too
Doesn't mean that you have to forget
Let your memories grow stronger and stronger
'Til they're before your eyes
You'll come back
When they call you
No need to say goodbye
You'll come back
When they call you
No need to say goodbye

I live in a country where wars arise and this song interprets some of the feelings surrounding the fight.
the first and second verse talk about a war that is just ending, and the thought, feeling, hope... they are all the idea of winning..then its about soldiers saying goodbye to each other..
Just because everything's changing
Doesn't mean it's never been this way before
^ is a new war, and theres the feeling of war in the air which changes a lot of things, but its happend before so you can know what to expect..
then the song talks about soldiers saying goodbye to their families before they go off to fight
Now we're back to the beginning
It's just a feeling and no one knows yet
^ just like in the beginning of the song, the feeling of a chance of winning
But just because they can't feel it too
Doesn't mean that you have to forget
your enemy who have lost doesnt feel the win, but you can forget the people who died - allies and enemy..
and even though the war is over, when theres another one you will go to defend your people and country.
I have just returned a few days from my year away in Canada, and this is exactly how I'm feeling, I knew this would happen and I tried my best not to let the feelings get the best of me, but I can't help it.
"Just because they cant feel it too doesnt mean you have to forget, let the feelings grow stronger and stronger..."
Even though it is so difficult, this is what I must do!
So I just wanted to say thank you, becaus of your posts, I thought of this song in this way and now when I'm missing my life abroad I have something to turn to for some comfort...
I know you wrote this way back in 2008 so I hope it gets easier and better to adjust back to life, I really really hope so
Which then grew into a hope
Which then turned into a quiet thought
Which then turned into a quiet word
And then that word grew louder and louder
'Til it was a battle cry
I'll come back
When you call me
No need to say goodbye
^^
the feeling they speak of, that transforms, is NARNIA.
they all feel it, then they hope it, then they think it, then they say it aloud.
when they are there, it becomes a brilliant and thriving cry to all of that world. they are for narnia, for aslan.
and i totally agree with everything the person on top of me said.
I like Regina Spektor a lot, but here she sounds just a little bit different, but it suites her.
I don't realy know what it's about, but I just think it's about a joung girl and boy in love, but it's a silent love, one no one knows about.
(Maybe it's a secret love, not allowed to excist?)
But for some reason, the boy have to go away, here for the battle, may be something else. He has to leave her. But yet they know that their love is true and that if they wait long enough at the end, they wil come back together, because it's ment to be.
And finally, everything will be allright..
(like a happily ever after :)

"I'll come back
When you call me
No need to say goodbye"
Talks of the way that the children enter Narnia when the people of Narnia call for them, rather than just barging in.
Now we're back to the beginning
It's just a feeling and no one knows yet
But just because they can't feel it too
Doesn't mean that you have to forget
Talks about how when the children return to earth, they are the only ones that know about Narnia and how just because the rest of the world doesn't know about it doesn't mean that they should forget it.
Let your memories grow stronger and stronger
Until they're before your eyes
You'll come back
When they call you
No need to say goodbye
Suggests that the Peter, Susan, Lucy and Edmund should remember Narnia vivedly, and that they will return when they are called back.
it's a beautiful song and i wish i could hear it all the time. =]
'Til they're before your eyes" He is talking for me about the inmortality of his soul... of our souls... I am not religius at all... havent been in church for 5 years maybe... it just occured to me when i listened to that song.
"It started out as a feeling" - the feeling of love from God in the beginning
"Which then grew into a hope" - a hope for God to have humans in his kingdom as his people that were made in his image.
"Which then turned into a quiet thought" - God seriously thought about it and considered it.
"Which then turned into a quiet word" as it starts in the gospel of John, "at the beginning it was the word" and as CS Lewis explains in the book of the Magician's nephew, Aslan starts Narnia with a roar/sound/word.
"And then that word grew louder and louder" in the book Aslan gets closer and closer to the humans and therefore the sound becomes louder.
"'Til it was a battle cry" I think this is referring to the battle between Satan and God for us, well, where we screwed up!
"I'll come back
When you call me
No need to say goodbye" God WILL come back, as he does in the form of Jesus to save us later. Jesus says ask and u shall be given, and so when it says Ill come back when u call me, it's basically from God, saying that when u (human beings) need me the most and truly ask for me, I WILL come back to you.
"Just because everything's changing
Doesn't mean it's never been this way before" Just because we are out of God's kingdom, it doesn't mean that it was never like that. In the movie, as they are going out of Narnia, it doesnt mean that it never happened.
"All you can do is try to know who your friends are
As you head off to the war" The war is between us and God on one side and Satan on the other. We just need to have discernment and see what and who is our friend in this world.
"Pick a star on the dark horizon
And follow the light" Choose God in this whole dark world, as he says in the bible the word shines in the darkness.
"You'll come back when it's over
No need to say goodbye" God tells us that we will be back in his kingdom when all this war is over and if we rely on his we will come out victorious.
"Now we're back to the beginning" We are getting closer and closer to the end of the world, which is living in his Kingdom, like the beginning.
"It's just a feeling and no one knows yet
But just because they can't feel it too
Doesn't mean that you have to forget" As in the movie, where Lucy tells Aslan that no one believed her, and aslan says why should that keep you from believing? in the same way, a lot of the times we do not feel God's presence, but just because we can't feel it, or that people around us can't feel it, it doesnt mean that He is not there.
"Let your memories grow stronger and stronger
'Til they're before your eyes" It is referring to our memories in God's Kingdom.
"You'll come back
When they call you
No need to say goodbye" Basically, God will call us back to the heavens, and we will be reconciled.
again, this is just something that I just THINK! there is NO evidence that it is true. Specially cuz Regina Spektor is a Jew and not a Christian (well, she still believes that God will come back to save us tho, so .. yeah!).
:)
This song is still so beautiful, even without the "Narnian" reasoning behind it.
It fits the story of two of my characters' relationship:
They became fast friends after meeting, but were hesitant to show their affection. Things get pretty intense in the story, and someone dies in his place at the end of the year. The next year, she has to leave him to find her father, but she was deceived and he and their friends come to rescue her. They escape and danger only seems to come into their lives more and more often following then. The next year, their relationship is severed and complicated. The following year, he leaves for the war and she is separated from him and stays behind, but has to leave home to seek refuge from an invasion. They become reunited about a month later, and continue to face peril... That's as much as i've written, but it's so amazing! I love it :)
