Better Than Here Lyrics

I looked; I looked up to the sky.
Your face was drawn in black and white.
Tonight, we’re stuck inside a lie,
And the fear is we won’t get alive.

The stink, it’s in the air,
And the air, it’s getting thin.

Where you going?
As fast as you can run.
And where you going?
Do you hide behind the sun?
Stay down low, and stay down where you are.
And where you going?
Is it better than here?

The truth, oh we’ve turned into a joke,
And it’s true, I’d give anything to hold you tonight.
Tonight I stay, but you, oh, you slip away.

And where you going?
As fast as you can run
And where you going?
Do you hide behind the sun?
Stay down low, and stay down where you are.
And where you going?
Don’t let them come after you.

I trip, trip, trip in vain,
And lie, lie, lie, to me.
I trip, trip, trip in vain,
I’d like to get away.
You like it like you do,
I’d like to be with you.
I’d like to live up there.
But I wake up oh, I wake up, and I wake up, and I wake up, and I’m here

Tonight I’m stuck here,
And tomorrow I, I disappear.

And where you going?
As fast as you can run.
And where you going?
Do you hide behind the sun?
Stay down low, and stay down where you are.

‘Cause it’s better than, oh it’s better than before.

I have a feeling this song is all about the grass being greener on the other side. As in, the person in this song thinks somewhere else is better, the "grass is greener" so to speak. However, Raine is saying that it isn't, that there is nothing wrong with him or the place where they are. Whether he is describing a physical location or perhaps the state of their relationship I don't know. To me it seems that he is discussing a person moving away or moving up in the world and forgetting about where they came from.

This song is on the CD "A Decade", OLP's best-hits CD just released in North America. It's a great song. Less over-produced than the songs on HiPT...maybe because this song was never rounded out for the CD. Kind of like Kiss on the Mouth.

this song represents what HiPT should have been, songs that reflect Raine's songwriting ability with coorespondently evolving lyrics. Also has an old-school OLP vibe to it. Best song released from OLP for years and years. Better Than Here and Kiss on the Mouth make Decade a worthwile CD just by themselves. Heres hoping we see more of this if OLP ever relases another albm

Yeah, Better Than Here and Kiss on the Mouth are what HiPT should have for sure. They are still a little too clean for my liking compared to Naveed or whatever, but they've got great sounds nonetheless. I've heard rumours started from Jeremy Taggart that OLP is pretty much broken up now and going their own ways. I hope they can put out at least one more good rock album. Stuff like the two new songs. I mean, there was so much good demo stuff not even used on HiPT that I've heard clips of. Vampyres for one. They have like 25-30 songs they recorded and never released! At least let us hear them, haha.

But yeah, I want one more CD with the classic OLP sound, with lyrics that make you think and layered guitars and bass and assymetrical drumming and everything else we've come to love. I just hope they've got one more left in them.

The part "Where you going?" Seems incomplete when he sings it imo... like maybe it should be "Where are you going?" I dunno... I don't like this song as much as their others.

Yeah it would make more sense grammattically if it was "where are you going?".

But a lot of their songs would make more sense if they sang it the way it should be to be correct. ;)

I write the lyrics down as he sings them, not as what the correct version should be.

This is definitly one of my favorite our lady peace songs, best song they've released in a long time. This song can be interpreted many different ways like all of their songs. Raine has always been very political in his lyrics, "the air is getting thin" can have some reference to global warming. It can also talk about how we are evolving as human beings, as in we are running away from being human, the division of classes, etc. I know he's happily married with Chantal, but there could also be reference to sexual politics in the song. A boy liking a girl, and her not sharing the same feelings. Sun.. in the renaissance represents lover. Where you going.. her running away. I'll elaborate some more later.

cheers

Yeah I'm going to stick with the assumption that it's about a person getting full of themselves and leaving their old life behind, but their friends are telling them to stop, that where they came from is really not so bad.
