Thoughtlife Lyrics
And my heart left my chest
So forgive me
As you leave to find that next something new
But I can't for the life of me remember when
You changed your words from "I love you"
To saying you don't know
Just know that you can't take back what you said
Darling, I'm not in the forgiving mood
You kept on replying
It was all in my head
Well you're just a liar
And I've got the proof
I've got the proof
So with these few words, you'll erase me
Two years of our lives meant nothing to you
But this fool you have made of me has a lesson learned
You can't trust a lover
Who was never a friend
The end
Just know that you can't take back what you said
Darling, I'm not in the forgiving mood
You kept on replying
It was all in my head
Well you're just a liar
And I've got the proof
I've got the proof
Oh, I would have offered my life
Taken you home, made you my wife
But hearing you now
Filling your mouth with a coward's lies
You're just a disguise of the girl of my dreams
But I know she's waiting for me
So I'll open my eyes to the day that's before me
And leave here to find that next something new
So forgive me
As you leave to find that next something new
But I can't for the life of me remember when
You changed your words from "I love you"
To saying you don't know
Darling, I'm not in the forgiving mood
You kept on replying
It was all in my head

At first when i heard this song on the end of the question deluxe edition, i kinda skipped it. It had poor production and the rhyming is fairly simple when it does rhyme. However, for some reason, some days later, i had "so with these few words you'll erase me" and it made me come back to this song, and since then, i have loved it and i love every part of the song now. Emery has an honesty that few compare to. So many relationships end on such a sudden note, as if nothing ever happened (and i know from experience) but as the phrase goes "a friendship that can cease has never been real." This is basically a mature way of showing the disbelief of things that have gone on in the relationship.
Such as where he says "i can't for the life of me remember when you changed your words from i love you to i don't know." I think that's referring to how people can tell you that they love you, but it's really a matter of trust.
this is such a great song..and its obviously about his wife cheating on him...and he is so hurt..and really doesnt know what to do at this point...EMERY=BEST BAND EVER
my bad...about his soon to be wife
i can relate to this song so much... at the moment, it's lyrics are the only thing that keeps me sane. i can especially relate to the line that says "And my heart left my chest So forgive me As you leave to find that next something new But I can't for the life of me remember when You changed your words from I love you..."
It makes me cry, but it helps, you know...
'You're just a disguise Of the girl of my dreams But I know she's waiting for me'
Is the part that gets me everytime
i agree with eric91 this is the best band ive heard in my life they are so honest it just hits right where it hurts in some of there songs all i have to do is hear some certain lyrics and my voice starts to shake
Man, when he says "I know she's waiting for me" it almost made me cry cause it's totally hard sometimes to be patient and wait for "the One" and believe that they're "waiting" for me too.....(sigh) such a good song...
Amazing song! Such honesty and reality that it makes up so it's lack of "bells and whistles"...in fact, this song is so much better with out all the added junk cuz it IS so real. Anyway, it's obviously about his girlfriend of two years that suddenly broke it off and he didn't know why and he was crushed cuz he had planned to marry her, and it ends with him looking to a brighter better future. The part "I would have offered my life, taken you home, made you my wife" KILLS me everytime I hear it, it's so heartfelt! And that's what makes this song amazing!
Quick question, can anyone tell me if this is a true story for him? If not, it's still really painful to hear and imagine, but if it is...then wow, that's even more painful. I know my brother can relate to this part:
"i can't for the life of me remember when you changed your words from i love you to i don't know."
Because it's weird sometimes, people will abruptly end relationships with little or sometimes no explanation at all, and that has happened plenty of times to my brother. :\ And it happens so fast and out of nowhere, it's like you can't even remember when the transition was made from "I love you" to "I don't know about us".
I can not stand these kind of songs. I love this band but when they write stuff like this ugh! its so annoying its not her fault she fell out of love with him stop blaming her and just leave her alone she's moving one. What good do songs like this do for these people.. Once agian GET OVER IT!

I'm a big boy, I can deal with someone being honest and open with me and my feelings wont get hurt. But when she LIES as most women do, THAT'S the IT we are not ready to get OVER.

This is how people move on. So he's doing exactly what she's doing, just in his own way. Don't be such a hater, man.

The problem was she was not being honest. It was clear she was avoiding the deeper relationship he wanted. As soon as marriage entered the equation she wanted out. But rather than admit that she didn't want to move on with him she filled her mouth "with a coward's lies". Furthermore he did move on. He saw her as a disguise of the girl of his dreams and so he vows to keep looking because he knows she's waiting. He knows there is somebody he can spend the rest of his life with, that IS moving on. She was in it for the short term, he sees that, so he's moving on to find somebody that doesn't resort to driving people away rather than telling them straight. And as for your question. A lot of people are in situations like this. And this song is inspirational in that it has the singer looking to a brighter future rather than stuck in a lonely past. And sometimes penning one's emotions onto paper and making a song out of it can help one or others cope with or grow through our experiences. And last of all, I doubt you would say that if you were in the character's position. So you love somebody, they start driving you away, avoid you, give you the silent treatment. They don't want to be the bad guy/girl and dump you, they want you to get the hint and dump yourself pretty much. They want you to end the relationship so they don't feel guilty. And the reason they put you through all of this is because your relationship went past their comfort zone. They're afraid of a serious relationship. They might have even cheated on you to get the point across. You ask them if they ever loved you and they don't know. Their mind is clouded with doubt. They're not ready for the future. They could tell you no, that would end the relationship, but would end it from their side. Suddenly it's your love being called into question. It was all in your head they say. To be innocent they need you to be the faker. This situation happens a lot, both ways gender wise. This song calls attention to it, just like a lot of Emery's songs call attention to other issues, some controversial even.
