Open up the book you beat me with again
Read it off one sentence at a time
I'm tired of all the lines
Convictions and your lies
What right do you have to point at me?

Well, I'm sitting alone thinking about it all over coffee
And still crowdin' my space are the things you still hold against me
You cannot save me

Well, it's not the time to breakdown
Well, it's not the time to breakdown
Well, it's not the time to break up this love
Keep it together now
It's not the time to break

Read it all, no need for separating here
You see what you want and try to justify
All your little lines
Convictions and your lies
What right do you have to point at me?

Well, I'm sitting alone thinking about it all over coffee
And still crowdin' my space are the things you still hold against me
You cannot save me

Well, it's not the time to breakdown
Well, it's not the time to breakdown
Well, it's not the time to break up this love
Keep it together now
It's not the time to break

Open up the book you beat me with again
Read it off one sentence at a time

Well, it's not the time to breakdown
Well, it's not the time to breakdown
Well, it's not the time to breakdown
Well, it's not the time to breakdown
Well, it's not the time to breakdown
Well, it's not the time to break up this love
Keep it together now
Well, it's not the time to break
Breakdown

This song is about religion, as chris says on an interview on napster. The book is the bible and the first line is about people who use it to try and beat the ideas into you.The song is about everyone interpreting the bible diffrently and using the parts they like "Read it off no need for seperating it, you see what you want and try to justify, all your little lines, convictions, and your lies." The he talks about the people who point him out because he's not perfect "why do you have to point at me?" The chorus is about keeping his relationship with God alive and not breaking down. The original chorus for this song was different and i think it went along better with the meaning "No, I cannot fill the void with what you're shoving on me. If you don't know the truth, how can you say you know me? If all this is wrong, I'll find out on my own. So don't kill me inside, I'm trying to live,I'm trying to live. how is this helping me? I'm trying to live, trying to live"

This chorus was in the original song titled "Conviction"

i think that "the book" means all the things that his girlfriend says to put him down, its like, so many things you could write a book. i think the song as a whole is about him trying to save his relationship, and he doesnt want to give up on it yet

    I love this song....

I'm kind of unsure of the meaning completely...but i think it means dont just breakdown and let a love go because something went wrong.... i think its kinda tell you to stick with it. Like its just not the time to breakdown, hold on.

i'm def not sure if thats anywhere close but after listening to it a few times thats what really stuck out at me

“Well, I'm sitting alone thinking about it all over coffee. And still crowdin' my space are the things you still hold against me. You cannot save me.”

Makes me think he’s at home because I don’t imagine he’s at Starbucks surrounded by things that give him grief and bad memories.

I’m not real sure what book he’s being bashed over the head with. The bible perhaps? Cliché I know, but that’s what I would associate “The Book” with. It would explain the “You cannot save me” as some religions consider a person being saved when they have accepted Christ in their lives.

I love how ambiguous this song is being that it could be a lover, or a family member, that breaks down a person with their hypocritical remarks. And then of course, the need to keep it together, “not the time to breakdown”.

It sounds like he's battling himself between what's right and what's percieved as wrong. He may not necessarily be singing about himself, but by the sounds of it maybe it's about a man who's done everything right so far with the exception of one dilemna he finds himself in. I'd like to think the narration is of a married man debating whether or not sacraficing everything he's built with his marriage is worth taking a risk and finding love in someone he's grown close to. He's trying his best not to breakdown because although there are pros and cons to each situation, he can't picture himself without either people in his life.

It sounds like he is in a relationship, and he feels like he should break up with his significant other, but he knows that if he sticks it out everything will turn out ok.

ok, its not actually a book lol, hes saying that this person is basically being a hypocrit and saying that they should follow what they say if they are going to tell him to....sorry but this isnt religious at all lol

Well I couldn't figure out what it meant BUT i agree with what i read another person thought this song meant :

by AlainaLM215 on 02-22-2007 @ 08:41:35 PM I think the song is about divorce. It sounds like "the book" is the huge stack of divorce papers that she filed for. Sitting reading over all of it over coffee trying to digust it all. He dosen't want it to happen and he wants to still try to save the marriage. Thats just my little spin on it.

i think that it is about a guy who is being told how he should be or act by someone else in his life, who doesn't live the way they are telling him to. They are throwing the book at him without reading it for themselves.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.

No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
