Oh, Play along.
She wills it.
Oh, Sunday came.
Promised you'd tell her.
She sat up in bed.
Answered your call dear.
Smeared purple and red.
You're gonna leave her tonight.
She sat up with her eyes wide.
You fell in love with a girl you knew.
You've come to say goodbye.
You're gonna leave her tonight.
Under a cheap July sky.
Tell her.
Tell Mary.
After the first touch.
Her skirt boring.
Her voice deep and charming at first.
You could make her come back once in a while.
If you painted a fresco.
There she'd be with her powder half falling off.
So perfect from far.
You're gonna leave her tonight.
She sat up with her eyes wide.
You fell in love with a girl you knew.
You've come to say goodbye.
You're gonna leave her tonight.
Under a cheap July sky.
Tell her.
Tell Mary.
Meet me at the pictures Mary.
Adam said that he was leaving.
Meet me at the pictures Mary.
Adam said that he was leaving.
Meet me.
Meet Me.
You're gonna leave her tonight.

The version that I have of this song is slow. It may be too slow for me. But doesnt change the fact that I still love it.
I love them, and I love their look. :]
first comment. honered? true that.
I heart this song. I get two meanings from it that go together all throughout the song when I listen to it...
I either get that he's cheating on mary, and breaking up with her because of that;; or that he's going into the service or something like the army or marines, and thats why he's leaving. "You fell in love with a girl you knew" could either mean Mary is that girl he knew, or that he fell in love with a different girl..
I dunno, I get those two meanings every time I hear this song.... its slow, but beautiful
Am I the only one who thinks it sounds more like [AND makes more sense] that it would be "Meet me at the bleachers Mary" like.. the rows of seats at sports games in shit. That would be a classic place for her to tell Mary herself, after school or something,if their guy is too pansy to own up to fucking around.
and* ughh. Sorry, this song hits home and bitching about the lyrics is a really lame way of dealing with it haha.

This song is based off a book called Mary that was written by Vladimir Nabokov.I'm not sure but when it says "You're gonna leave her tonight. She sat up with her eyes wide. You fell in love with a girl you knew. You've come to say goodbye. You're gonna leave her tonight. Under a cheap July sky. " I think it's refering to a certain part in the book. This guy is dating this girl and his past lover Mary ends up coming back into the picture. So he goes over to his current lovers house and tells her he fell in love with someone else.Which I think is the "She sat up with her eyes wide. You fell in love with a girl you knew. And you've come to say goodbye. " Cause in the book he just flat out says he's come to say goodbye cause he's in love with someone else.I could be wrong cause I haven't gotten through the book yet so it could refer to a different part of the book.Anyways hope this wasn't to jumbled sounding. You guys should read the book it's pretty good!!
So, I have officially become obsessed with this song.
What I am getting from this song is this: Mary's boyfriend or whatever is getting ready to leave (for whatever reason) and he doesn't wanna hurt her by telling her, but he has to for the better. "Oh, Sunday came; Promise you'd tell her" I think means that he finally realizes that he HAS to tell her he is leaving.
I want to say first that I don't know anything about the bible, but I do know that Mary and Adam are biblical names. I don't know if that's a coincidence or it plays into the theme.
Either way, the song tells the story from the perspective of an outsider to the relationship, or at least the girl Adam fell in love with. The tone of the words aren't vindictive towards Mary, nor do they blame Adam, just lays out the situation plainly. That makes me think it's a friend of both people, who wanted Adam to come clean and not string Mary along.
What strikes me the most is that there's several implications that Mary already knows. "She sat up with her eyes wide," can mean both that Mary feeling insecure and not good enough kept her awake, and that she saw through to the truth. The song starts by asking Adam, or maybe everyone involved, to play along and go through the motions.
The song is reflective and comes with a feeling of resignation and guilt. Regardless of the story behind it or intentions they had writing it, it's a really wonderful song I've enjoyed for years!
