I want to say first that I don't know anything about the bible, but I do know that Mary and Adam are biblical names. I don't know if that's a coincidence or it plays into the theme.

Either way, the song tells the story from the perspective of an outsider to the relationship, or at least the girl Adam fell in love with. The tone of the words aren't vindictive towards Mary, nor do they blame Adam, just lays out the situation plainly. That makes me think it's a friend of both people, who wanted Adam to come clean and not string Mary along.

What strikes me the most is that there's several implications that Mary already knows. "She sat up with her eyes wide," can mean both that Mary feeling insecure and not good enough kept her awake, and that she saw through to the truth. The song starts by asking Adam, or maybe everyone involved, to play along and go through the motions.

The song is reflective and comes with a feeling of resignation and guilt. Regardless of the story behind it or intentions they had writing it, it's a really wonderful song I've enjoyed for years!
