City Escape Lyrics

Please, what happened to the flame?
(It burned down the sides)
With a fondness for cooking history, revealing thoughts of Ms Terri.
In the heat of the night, a woman wealthy of a parous plight erased a harlots life.

Plagued by practical and a mercenary lust they tear at her skin
(The trouble began, it would never end)

Clawing at her throat with a smell of desperate and a lack of regret
(The trouble began, it would never end)

Free, pardoned by the flame.
(That burned down the sides)
Her feet began to bleed between the seams, but she persisted to the streets.

In the heat of the night, the river rendered the chance she surely needs to stay alive.

Plagued by practical and a mercenary lust they tear at her skin
(The trouble began, it would never end)

Clawing at her throat with a smell of desperate and a lack of regret
(The trouble began, it would never end)

Oh, but her breath escapes her.
Oh, but the pulse remains.
Oh, but her breath escapes her.
Oh, but her pulse remains.

Places, People, the stage is set
(X2)

Plagued by practical and a mercenary lust they tear at her skin
(The trouble began, it would never end)

Clawing at her throat with a smell of desperate and a lack of regret
(The trouble began, it would never end)
(X2)

This further strengthens my argument that the flame may refer to the father. As if the child is asking "why don't I have a father like the other kids?" in the opening line. Just to go on record I believe in personal interpretation and taking from a song what it means to you, I just enjoy seeing everyone's opinions and offering new viepoints as well :)

to monuments melodies...sooo sounds like the mars volta, especially the intro...

Ms. terri and the flame is his mother and the man she slept with. The flame is the bastard child of the fire.

"In the heat of the night, the river rendered the chance she surely needs to stay alive."...the river represents her baptism...her re-birth, she now lives on vicariously through her conceived child, the fire. She lives on through her son, as anyone with a child live on through their children.

"With a fondness for cooking history, revealing thoughts of Ms Terri." always thought he was saying "mystery" and maybe casey named her this for a reason?

"In the heat of the night, a woman wealthy of a parous plight erased a harlots life." ms. terri has given birth before, "parous" meaning given birth twice or more and "plight" being a unfortunate situation, so i believe this is not the first time she has been pregnant. she is running away from the city to have this child and raise it, and she's trying to "erase" her life as a prostitute.

but i think the pimp/priest has set out his people to try and stop her from escaping, and they beat her and throw her in the river. or she can't get across the river and she is stuck there and they are coming after her still.

"Oh, but her breath escapes her. Oh, but the pulse remains."

she stops breathing but she is still alive.

This song is fucking amazing. They remind me of TMV just because of their story. Every TMV album has been a story of some sort, but of course, this is a little mor direct. Great song though. Oh, and the song is called City Escape, so I think taht it's about Ms. Terri escaping from the city where she whored.

song's about when ms terri left the city because she was pregnant with the child.

"In the heat of the night, the river rendered the chance she surely needs to stay alive." in the story, as she's leaving the city she falls into the river and nearly dies. that's when she becomes ms. terri.

so basically the story is started now... in batte simo del fuoco which means baptism of fire. ms terri is a prostitute and the boys conceived in a whore house with some random desperate guy.

no, im pretty sure this song is merely about her life as a prostitute.

battesimo del fuoco is the childs birth "to cast her back to hell again".. she can now continue to work the streets.

i used to think that this was when the child found out that his mom was a prostitute, untill casey told me that he doesnt find that out untill the 2nd half of the 2nd album.

im pretty sure this is just a discription and a hint towards us as the listeners that she is a prostitute... but is still hidden to her child.
