ms. terri has given birth before, "parous" meaning given birth twice or more and "plight" being a unfortunate situation, so i believe this is not the first time she has been pregnant. she is running away from the city to have this child and raise it, and she's trying to "erase" her life as a prostitute.
but i think the pimp/priest has set out his people to try and stop her from escaping, and they beat her and throw her in the river. or she can't get across the river and she is stuck there and they are coming after her still.
