I think he's begging to be saved from his hatred. Or even deeper, a drug problem. Add the opening statements, his "freedom" is his burden. You have to face problems not hate. You have to sacrifice the high and be the drone and contribute to the world. He is aware, so he keeps slipping in and out of grace. Can't keep his head above water. That kind of thing. Always turning to the easy way.
