Sometimes the river flows but nothing breathes.
A train arrives but never leaves.
It's a shame.

Oh life, like love that walks out of the door,
Of being rich or being poor.
Such a shame.

But it's then, then that faith arrives
To make you feel at least alive.
And that's why you should keep on aiming high,
Just seek yourself and you will shine.

You've go to search for the hero inside yourself,
Search for the secrets you hide.
Search for the hero inside yourself
Until you find the key to your life.

In this life, long and hard though it may seem,
Live it as you'd live a dream.
Aim so high.

Just keep the flame of truth burning bright.
The missing treasure you must find
Because you and only you alone
Can build a bridge across the stream.

Weave your spell in life's rich tapestry -
Your passport to feel supreme.

You've go to search for the hero inside yourself,
Search for the secrets you hide.
Search for the hero inside yourself
Until you find the key to your life.

Search inside yourself. (you've got to search)
Search inside yourself. (you've got to search)

You've go to search for the hero inside yourself,
Search for the secrets you hide.
Search for the hero inside yourself
Until you find the key to your life.

You've got to.(search inside yourself)
You've got to.(search inside yourself)
You've got to.(search inside yourself)

Search.

This song is about the journey of being true to yourself. It's a journey because you have to figure out all of those secrets you hide, even from yourself. Being the "hero" simply means you are empowered to overcome anything that is stopping you from moving forward in your life. When you do, you "find the key to your life" and can move forward with your life.

"Sometimes the river flows but nothing breathes A train arrives but never leaves, it's a shame Oh, life like love that's walked out of the door Of being rich or being poor, such a shame"

    Doesn't matter who you are - you're stuck. That's a shame.

"But it's then, then that faith arrives To make your feelings alive And that's why, you should keep on aiming high Just seek yourself and you will shine"

When you start to believe in yourself, and have that faith to keep going, you begin the journey of understanding yourself, and when you figure something it, then you will shine brighter as you have less burdon.

"You've got to search for the hero inside yourself Search for the secrets you hide Search for the hero inside yourself Until you find the key to your life"

You're the hero who can work your stuff out. Keep going!

"In this life, long and hard though it may seem Live it as you'd live a dream, aim so high Just keep the flame of truth burning bright The missing treasure you must find Mmm-mmm-mmm"

Follow your dreams, but remember that life isn't easy, so make it work by aiming high to better yourself over time. Keep being true to yourself... that's the treasure you must find.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Punchline

Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
