Are You Swimming In Her Pools? Lyrics

Are you swimming in her pools?
Are you swimming in her pools?

Will you be brushing off her snow?
Will you be brushing off her snow?
Will you be brushing off her snow?

How can you stand the cold?
How can you stand the cold?

And if you're still there when it snows
Will you still be there when it goes?
Will you still be there when it's time
To fill the pools again?

And will you be coming back here?
Will you be coming back here?
Will you be coming back here?

Are you running up the river banks
And tracing them like long fingers
Are you running up her river banks
And navigating them?
Fingers of a hand

'Cause fingers make the hand
And rivers make the land

Is she cradling you well?
Oh is she cradling you well?
'Cause if I call you baby, she should cradle you well

Does she fucking know?
Does she fucking know?

And how the lines that appear around your eyes
When you are smiling
Are revered for the way in which they always reappear

Oh, will you be coming back here?
Oh, will you be coming back here?
Oh, will you be coming back here?

I hope you find your mother
I hope you find your mother there
I hope you find your mother there

You hit the ground running with a terrifying speed
But it's the ground you cover that terrifies me
And brace yourself for the sound of bleeding

'Cause bleeding hearts bleed
Bleeding hearts bleed
Bleeding hearts bleed

And "please" is not a word that I ever say quietly...

You said your love was fierce, fierce, fierce
You said your love was fierce, it's true
You said your love was fierce, fierce, fierce
You said your love was fierce and I agree with you

His child of the future is the child I am seeing, too
You said your love was fierce and I agree with you
These tigers at heart are the tigers I am seeing, too
You said your love was fierce and I agree with you

I don't think this song has been interpreted correctly by the other commenters, and I'm just going to put in my thoughts. It's not a (traditional?) love song and it's not a song about cheating in my opinion. It's actually a lot sweeter than that. The song is from the perspective of a father who's son is growing up and has a girlfriend that he's really really serious about, and the father just wants to make sure he's not rushing things and is up for such a serious relationship. It really does sound like a parent lecturing their child about making sure they've thought things through.

“(2x) Are you swimming in her pools?

(3x) Will you be brushing off her snow?

(2x) How can you stand the cold?

And if you're still there when it snows Will you still be there when it goes? Will you still be there when it's time To fill the pools again?”

This part of the song is about dad asking the son if he's there for her for real, through good times and bad. He's asking if he'll always be able to return to her even after fights and if he'll be able to work through it with her. The snow and the cold is a metaphor for the fallout and sadness of whatever fight they might possibly have (because all long relationships good and bad have disagreements).

“Are you running up the river banks And tracing them like long fingers Are you running up her river banks And navigating them? Fingers of a hand

'Cause fingers make the hand And rivers make the land”

People are complex, and there's so much to know about them. If you're serious about the relationship you should really get to know them, there's way more than sex in long term loving relationships. I know this sounds a little “Well duh of course people really ought to get to know one another before they make commitments” but parents always give us advice like this and try to make sure we're doing things right.

“Is she cradling you well? Oh is she cradling you well? 'Cause if I call you baby, she should cradle you well”

Baby means child here and not lover and refers to the son. “You're my kid and I want her to treat you right.” That sentence is in the present tense not the past tense because the son will always be part of his family.

“Does she fucking know? Does she fucking know?

And how the lines that appear around your eyes When you are smiling Are revered for the way in which they always reappear”

“I appreciate you. You're loyal and a good person and I hope she realizes that.”

“(3x) Oh, will you be coming back here?”

Through the song the son is reminded that even though he's off doing adult things he should always keep his parents in mind (“just call me once and a while”).

“I hope you find your mother (2x)I hope you find your mother there”

IMO there's no hidden meaning here and it's totally sincere. It's said that we often seek partners that resemble our parents in some way. The dad in this song wants his son to meet someone as special as the son's mother. He hopes this girlfriend or fiancée has some of the mother's good qualities.

“You hit the ground running with a terrifying speed But it's the ground you cover that terrifies me And brace yourself for the sound of bleeding

'Cause bleeding hearts bleed Bleeding hearts bleed Bleeding hearts bleed

And "please" is not a word that I ever say quietly...”

Young people always rush things. The dad has this worry that his son has moved too quickly and is setting himself up for disaster. “But it's the ground you cover that terrifies me” - it might even be the son's very first love or first serious relationship. It's hard for parents to imagine their children growing up and getting married and it seems to them that it happens so quickly.

But it's a worry and not something the dad honestly believes, because the next lyrics are:

“You said your love was fierce, fierce, fierce You said your love was fierce, it's true You said your love was fierce, fierce, fierce You said your love was fierce and I agree with you

His child of the future is the child I am seeing, too You said your love was fierce and I agree with you These tigers at heart are the tigers I am seeing, too You said your love was fierce and I agree with you “

And at the closing of the song the dad comes to terms with the fact that his son is growing up and he has to go let him live life.

My Interpretation

This was pretty much exactly what I was going to say, except from a mother's POV. I suppose either one works well though.

I think it's about cheating... a guy is having an affair and this song is from his actual girlfriend's point of view.

I actually think it's "bleeding hearts plead." This makes more sense with the following line.

I think he's saying "For how long?" after "Are you swimming in her pools?"
