Bring On The Wonder Lyrics

I can't see the stars anymore living here
Let's go to the hills where the outlines are clear

Bring on the wonder
Bring on the song
I pushed you down deep in my soul for too long

I fell through the cracks at the end of our street
Let's go to the beach, get the sand through our feet

Bring on the wonder
Bring on the song
I pushed you down deep in my soul for too long

Bring on the wonder
We got it all wrong
We pushed you down deep in our souls for too long

I don't have the time for a drink from the cup
Let's rest for a while 'til our souls catch us up

Bring on the wonder
Bring on the song
I pushed you down deep in my soul for too long

Bring on the wonder
We got it all wrong
We pushed you down deep in our souls, so hang on

Bring on the wonder
Bring on the song
I pushed you down deep in my soul for too long

I do not believe that she is speaking about a relationship with a person but rather a relationship with God. Evidence can be seen for this in that she states "we got it all wrong, we pushed you down...."

I think she is stating that from her current position in life she is too busy for the relationship with God that she has pushed down deep in her soul for too long. From her current place, she cannot see the stars. At the end of the road that she has travelled, she fell through the cracks. So she has been saying let's go to a place a new location where she can see the stars and appreciate the Wonder of creation and be brought to song... All of which is metaphorical for praise.

She states that she has been too busy to drink from the cup. The cup in Judaism and in Christianity is references many times. Ie.

"I will take up the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord” (Psalm 116:13).

For me, I think it's rather clear that she is simply stating that her life has been too busy, too hectic, and that she has pushed God down in her soul for too long. This is a call for herself and for the world in general to return to a place of Wonder and praise at the awe of God.

My Interpretation

@SirWarpig @SirWarpig I know this is old, but just in case anyone else comes looking for answers, I totally agree with you.

Absolute twaddle.

@SirWarpig I could go with either a love song, of sorts, to another person, or what you suggest -- a religious theme. Any Christian Rock group could add it to their playlist.

she sounds like she's found herself. Maybe she became happier with her music and where she was going with it.

Absolutely haunting vocal.

beautiful. I think she's singing about the embracing 'the wonder' of a relationship.

For me it's like taking "the next step". The place where where she is now is not as fullfiling as she wants it to be, because she idealized it. Now she wants real life to meet her idealization. If it's a relationship, then she idealized him or the idea of the relationship for too long, but now she's tired of it and she needs some space to see if it will work out or not in real life, or maybe if the other person is willing to do something about it instead of "just dreaming", if that makes any sense

Her voice is amazing!

Hearing this song in the show "Bones" gave me a new outlook on it- it reminded me of the innocence we have as children that becomes broken and lost as we grow. She's singing of happiness and the Wonder, and how it's been repressed. Perhaps she found again the beauty and wonder she saw in the world when she was a child. To regain that, even for a moment, completely changes your outlook on life. As you grow older and more jaded you kind of lose yourself, you push away the wonder. And in the song, she's getting it back. That's my two cents.

@Araquee I also first heard the song on Bones. It was one of the saddest episodes. I agree with your interpretation, especially

@April_Showers24

Hey April, I actually wrote to Susan Enan and asked her about the inspiration for the song. She was rather vague in her response but basically indicated that she had a friend who was moving back to Scotland because he expressed that there was too much city and he wanted to get back to nature. That became the catalyst. She didn't give me anything more to go on than that. I still feel the interpretation makes the most sense.

Thank you for chiming in. :-)

@David De Ronne

What an utterly useless comment. Have something to add or just move on man. No need to be a prick.

Side note: I reached out to Erin not long after I posted this and asked her about the lyrics meaning. She shared a story with me about a friend leaving the country and how those emotions stirred her to want to get away to nature and reflect on the value of life, etc.

MUCH of what I communicated here in this analysis she relayed to me as well. So...

The loss of childhood wonder and amazement. Becoming jaded, forgetting to stop and feel.
