Up On The Roof Lyrics

The jones comes in late at night
It huts with a terrible bite
They don't come knockin' on my door
Or slink across the greasy floor

I'm up on the roof again
Watchin' the sparklers dance and play
Up on the roof again
Please don't take my ladder away(3x)

The jones it likes to call my name
Ain't got no one else for to blame
It grabs me by the shorty hairs
And drags me damn near everywhere

I'm up on the roof again
Watchin' the sparklers dance and play
Up on the roof again
Please don't take my ladder away(3x)

A song about sitting on a roof and being paranoid that someone is going to take away his ladder.

when i first heard the song, i thought it was just typical claypool humor (having since come to find out that there is method behind all of his madness) "up on the roof again, please don't take my ladder away" seemed straightforward enough, i mean who wants to find themselves up on a roof without a ladder to get back down with. but after reading the verse lyrics the ladder in question is to get BACK on the roof again. jones is a common reference to drug cravings. shorty hairs are pubes.

I am on board with plenty of what omkarma said. The verses are cravings, the chorus is getting high, or indulging in whatever your addiction is. I think the ladder line has two meanings. A desire to get back up and keep using whatever you're using; also, a desire to be able to get back down, the good ol' "one last hit" mentality. Don't let this be the one too many.

Maybe I'm stretching.
