I got a terrorist vibe to this song "'Scuse me sir but what is in your bag Feels like those evil things you had" this reminded me of the tightened secruity in all British Airports Autumn '06 because of the foiled terror plots. Also "i would like to leave the ride Too many emergencies this time" reminded me of 7/7 attacks on the number 30 bus It doesnt really fit with the rest of the lyrics but I like the idea of it being about find love in day to day "dangerous" city life and having to act a certain way to sort of survive the lifestyle "acting hard's been tough." I also like the alusions between "hard" and "tough" as an ironic choice of words. Also this songs awesome
Good interpretation. Hot Chip's lyrics are pretty vague and not really the main feature of the songs so I never focus on them too much but that really makes sense.
I think its about the peoples paranoia after a terrorist attacks and how they will feel very connected with all the people around them of whom they don't know the names.
and in the last part from "I'm in no fit state...." on I think its about breaking down and not trying to hide the truth that they are scared by masking it with masculinity
definitely linked to 'the warning'. very similar lyrically. i think it's about growing up (adolescence) and the difficult part of trying to figure out who you are and where you fit in the world.
I think it is about being in a relationship with someone that has a personality disorder, or if not disorder, has been through some very tough times and is up and down with their emotions/ unstable "Excuse me sir, I would like to leave the ride" - mood swings/ ups and downs/ emotionally unstable "Evil things you hide" - the tough times/things they have gone through to make them the way they are "We caught the fire but the body escaped"-the tough things that altered their mind "Acting hard's been tough"-trying to surpress the memories of the tough time/ tough things they went through
I do not relate to any of the other interpretations listed, it seems to me to be about having a bad trip on hallucinogens: "I'd like to leave the ride, too many emergencies this time. I forgot all this, all the things you feed us with (from some dude's bag)," which cause him to be in no fit state...
All these "terrorist" explanations are fine except that this song was released in 2006, well before the 7/7 bombings....
