I think it is about being in a relationship with someone that has a personality disorder, or if not disorder, has been through some very tough times and is up and down with their emotions/ unstable

"Evil things you hide" - the tough times/things they have gone through to make them the way they are
"We caught the fire but the body escaped"-the tough things that altered their mind
"Acting hard's been tough"-trying to surpress the memories of the tough time/ tough things they went through
