I might be wrong about this one, but the song is probably about a truck driver thinking about his wife back home, the road is both the only thing keeping them together (the time apart that they need not to fight all the time and to miss each other) and the only thing that could bring them down (the obvious distance and hardships of a relationship of that kind).
as great a rock ballad as any of the great hits. going all the way with the metaphor of driving in a road for the direction a relationship is taking. Love it.
