Earth to Bella (Part I) Lyrics

Earth to Bella,
you think you've got it all figured in.
Earth to Bella,
everything you know is wrong. Well, almost.
Earth to Bella,
I've seen when you are not listening.
I bear the burden
of being the voice that lets you know
we all grow old,
and before you swim you've gotta be ok to sink.

Earth to Bella,
the world can be an unfriendly place.
So hold your head up
and do your best to save some face.
It's not so hard...
just undo yourself and see a
second sun ascend.

Okay to sink.
I'm okay to sink
I'm okay to sink.
I'm okay to sink.

When I listen to earth to bella two things come to mind. Love & the warning of the pain that comes with it. One thing I feel when I hear this wonderful peace of music is a warning from Brandon to "Bella."

Everything you know is wrong (almost) Earth to Bella I see where you are not listening I bear the burden of being the voice that let's you know We all grow old And before you stand you've gotta be okay to sing

This makes me feel that he is warning her about the risk of being in love. And he who cares for her takes the burden of being the one to tell her it's not going to be easy. Or being in love with him she doesn't have a clue or some what an idea of how it's gonna really be. The second thing that comes to mind is the love he has for bella..He watches over her.. And he does not want the injustice of life, the unfairness, the inpuritys, the lies, the anger, the world period to hurt her. Earth to Bella The world can be an unfriendly place So wont you head off Do your best to save some face Its not so hard Just contain yourself and see your second sun Escape

Earth to Bella Wading water successfully Or are you really? Dont you want to see the deep? Its not so hard. Just forgive yourself and Feel the water over you.

the transition of shows that she is clueless that the pain she may face..and He is trying to warn her don't try and save the world bella....just please look after yourself and get out while you can. Cause maybe he's made the mistake of trying to play hero....and he doesn't want a broken heart to fall upon bella...

At least for Pt. 2...

I listened to this a few times and what stuck out from the rest of the song is the way the guitar comes in at the end. It felt almost out of place, and my mind started trying to figure out why it was there.

The singer is telling Bella (represented by the electric guitar) that she has to accept something, be at peace with it. Whatever it is, it is inevitable or simply the way things are and there's nothing to do about it.

Bella refuses to accept this. Whatever it is, it's something she can fight, something she can change. She starts protesting, yelling, screaming and flailing. And eventually she's drowned out by the noise, taken under by whatever this thing it.

Listening to it like that, the guitar at the end sounds like Bella in her death throes. And up until then I thought this was such an uplifting song.

My Interpretation

@RabbitMage interesting concept ...

Pretty sure nobody checks these anymore, but I believe this song is a simplistic discussion with anybody and everybody, we all have moments in life when we feel invincible like we have it all figured out, we don't listen to anyone, and we just do. We also have moments in life when we are down and out, and feel the world hates us, and is an unfriendly place. The moral of the story is that only after failure can you truly succeed, and you have to be OK to Sink if you want to Swim. Like any motivational quite, you miss 100% of the shots you don't take, Michael Jordan missed however many game winning baskets etc.

This song is simply Brandon or whomever speaking to everyone, a specific person and or himself, telling them sometimes, we just need to sink, undo what we know, and start a new. Let the Second Sun Ascend

My Interpretation

@TullyPoops good interpretation ... well thought out and written. Thanks for sharing (and now you know at least someone checked)

Wow first of all props to "drummasterfunk" for the lyrics, I've listened to it a hundred times on youtube and there were still fuzzy parts I coulden't make out.

Bradons lyrics are so open ended this song could really be to anyone or no one in particular. We know hes obviously singing to a person he thinks is struggling in life. "Everything you know is wrong" "I see where your not listening". Towards the middle of the song he seems to be sympathizing with this person, "the world can be an unfriendly place, do your best to save some face." And at the end of the song Bradon seems to be encouraging Bella, "its not so hard just forgive yourself and feel the water over you." I think "bella" represents all of humanity and Brandons telling us to not be so arrogant, forgive ourselves, and live life without fear.

Hm, the lyrics here could be a little off considering the bad quality but once the album's released we'll all know!

I think it's about telling someone who thinks they know all about life and growing old that they're wrong, that it's not all so bad. I like foreverSurf's interpretation of bella representing all of humanity. Definitely would be something the guys would write about amongst a first impression of it being about a singular person.

I really like the quiet emergency part. About a person/people who relies on other people/things for how to go about life or something..and he's saying they're all wrong. It could be about someone who's angry at themself, or being ridiculed by others for something, and that's why he says to forgive yourself and let the water come over her. The water being emotions, possibly. That it's okay to dive in and feel.

Haha it could go so many ways! That's what I love about Incubus though. They're never ever just obvious.

^^ try limewire, maybe its on there, its also on youtube,,, 'Don’t you want to see the deep? It’s not so hard. Just forgive yourself and Feel the water over you.' I love that part, so simple but powerful... I like the two interpertations above, seems like its all there...although I'm still kinda confused about why there is a reference to the water...is water like a place of purity? Enlightment, so to speak? Hm...I know that Brandon is a surfer, so is there any connection with that? That he feels at peace with the world while out at sea? And that then the balance of our world and nature is shown and restored? So then he wants all of the humanity to expirience this? Sort of like Warning girl, type of thing...right?

b you: I do believe you're correct about the water thing. A sort of "wake up" to humanity-or a singular person. Sort of..let things go where they go, let it all crash down, an overwhelming feeling. Or, yeah, the purity thing. Forgive yourself and let the regret wash away.

This song, when it gets released in stores (its already been leaked as torrents), is two parts, with the second part the last couple of stanzas. To do this song justice, i sent in the 2nd part. This song isnt too bad. One of the better tracks (both parts) off the album. Brandon's lyrics are the standout. water is about a purity sort of thing.
I think Brandon is trying to say instead of destroying our society, to conceptulise better ways of living, which links to what foreverSurf said :)
